Standard American pattern files come in three grades of coarsness (roughness): bastard cut is the most coarse, followed by second cut, and smooth cut.

 

 

So I guess if we apply this to people, those who are very coarse would be considered bastards.

Strangely that also use to be a term used over here when I was a yongster, I guess now that we are politically correct the term is no longer used.
