Camera help

A friend I know got a camera for Xmas and would like me to ask the forum members if they could help with a problem. The camera worked fine at Xmas time when she used it for a few days, but there seems to be a problem now a few months later. The camers is a Vivicam 5385 X3 optical zoom model. The problem is when she tries to turn it on. All that happens is the little red light thats beside the viewfinder flashes approx 50 times very quickly and then nothing happens after that. She has tried changing the batteries several times but to no avail and they definatly are in the correct way. Thanks in advance for any help offered

Could it be that it's pointing at something to close to focus on?

P.S. Alternatively, is she trying it in a darkened room and it's showing there's insufficient light without turning the flash on?

It's worth checking that it is set to take pictures rather than reviewing what has already been taken. A simple error but assuming the camera is OK it would account for the current situation.
