Well it's that time of year again when the calling of the Skate become too much to ignore so off we go. Going out with Colin Currie on his new boat MV Creagallan.

So if anyone's been out lately what's it fishing like. I will post on Tues with what was caught (or not).

Regards Martin.

Hope the 'kin' wind don't blow for you, pictures please. :)

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

Hiya,

I had my first session after them on Saturday, only spent 4 hrs at anchor and had two skate 160 & 154lb a 23lb conger and around 20 Spurs to just under 6lb plus a shed load of doggies.

The last time I spoke to Ronnie the firth was not fishing well at all, he reckons it's down to the number of fish not surviving being caught due to bad handling, having seen some pictures of fish caught from the small boats and the charter boats that could well be the case :(

Well then Davy maybe its time to leave them alone for a few year's and let them recover!!. But you know that will never happen. To many people making money out of them to stop it.

Anyone who fish's with me will tell you they are not allowed to bring the Skate on board only the sipper and myself bring them aboard and put them back. The least stess we can cause them the better.

Regard's Martin

Fishing for them is not an issue, as I have proven time and time again through the tagging they can be caught & release without any problems so long as they are looked after during the encounter.

The big problem is as soon as someone has caught a few they think they are an expert on them and know everything there is to know. These are the type of people that are the problem for the skate in the Oban area.

We have skippers and anglers that think its ok to have the fish held up with all the weight on the root of the tail, just to get a good picture. We have them hung from a gantry on a gaff, again to get a good picture. We have issued with the amount of deep hooked fish, though it never happens to anyone you speak to, though there are plenty of people that will tell you differently. We have the issue of bad gaffing, this was highlighted only a couple of months back when pictures were posted on the net of fish showing big gashes & lots of blood.

More's the pity that they can't be photoed and tagged and released from the side of the boat. Thats the way the larger conger are mainly treated unless you get trophy hunters who need the photo of them hung up. Saying that most of the ones that i see are released at the side of the boat, how ever if i was to catch one over a ton i would have to seriously consider the options. If the skipper gestimates the weight of the eel, thats good enough for me.

So whats to stop people catching them when they have been tagged and mistreating them?. Everytime i post on this site i feel your on my case and that your the ONLY person who know's how to catch a Skate.

I have been fishing up an around Oban/Mull for 27 years i do not think i am an expert but i do know right from wrong!!!

when it come's to handling fish.

Absolutely nothing, it has already happened with fish receiving deep cuts during recaptures after they have been tagged

Why the defencive reply ?

There was / is no one "on your case", I gave a general rundown of the problems that the skate face in the Oban area. Problems that are well known and real enough to warrant certain charter skippers to try and address these issues so it's not only me that has noticed it.
