Tricky shot

Martins are nesting this year (after an absence of three years) Tricky problem....camera wants to read the exposure including the white eaves and window frame, so decides 1/30 or1/60 is enough. This is to slow to freeze the action (they never keep still)

To far away for flash

I can up the shutter speed but then pics are to dark.............

Den, turn up your ISO (film speed) a tad, that will allow faster shutter. dont go to mad though, say 400? cos it can get a bit grainy? Assume you have ISO cotrol on camera?

Den, as a kid I was at school not far from you. Our conservatory at the Lodge had 8 house martin nests there. They're nothing like as common as they once were.

If the exposure metering on the camera doesn't allow that level of flexibility, it may be worth doing what commercial litho printers do. (Steve - this is where I need your professional help!)

You can gradually reduce the amount of black in the image using Photoshop or Corel Draw. It's called undercolour removal and it sharpens up areas where the contrast is too great for the camera to manage.

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

Good advice there lads, I have already zoomed out + digi and the pics are "noisy" so upping the ISO will make it even worse.

Tomorrow I will get out there earlier with the sun lower (hopefully shining under the eaves) and see what transpires.

These birds used to nest there every year until the old lady died and the place was "done up" and the painters scraped off all the old nests...there is another pair building a bit further along....roll on the babies :)

silly question perhaps

but what do you mean by noise ...how can pictures be noisy

Judy, 'Noise' is the grainy affect that gets worse as the ISO ('film sensitivity' in old money, lol) goes up.

Charlie..how do you do that :) :)

I don't have photoshop, I have Photosuite 3 and the pic you see on AN has been "brightened" a bit, but it has become a bit wishy washy

Thanks a bunch anyway,
