Sea Fishing Holidays - Non UK

Recommended Posts

Hi,

As you can see this is my first post. After hours of wading through site after site looking for actual details of fishing holidays I though it may be better to just ask here.

I am looking for recommendations for holiday destinations and/or holiday organisers for sea fishing trips abroad.

I have just returned from Cuba (Playa Pesquaro resort), which I found amazing for fishing.

I took a 3-meter telescopic rod & spinning reel, and a few lures with me and had no problem catching dozens of fish. Initially I found that fishing from the beach was useless as the depth of the water was low up until a reef - drop - off about 150 meters out. So I countered this by fishing from a pedalo!! Yes, silly I know, but whatever means necessary to catch right! Well let me tell you, after 30 seconds of dropping a muppet & dead-bait (shrimp bought from the hotel chef) I hooked a barracuda. Despite only having (stupidly) 8lb line and a 20lb leader I was able to play the barracuda into submission in only 2 hours and 10 minutes. Without scales I cannot say the exact weight, although I believe it was around 2.5 meters. I used a weighted hook and small steel trace after that, always with a shrimp and muppet or shad, and always simply let the bait drop to the bottom and retrieve as a jig. Other fish were grouper, red snapper and finally, the fish that broke my rod, a marlin. Shortly after hooking the fish I realised I has hooked a fish far to big for my equipment, and after loosing around 100 meters of line attempted to cut the line, though suffered a rod-break whilst in the struggle. Cutting my fishing trips short.

After this I booked a few fishing trips on chartered boats, though was severely disappointed after a total of 14 hours trawling and only 2 small barracuda.

I would very much like to do something similar to my initial fishing endeavours as simply sitting about drinking beer while trawling is a little boring so many beers later.

I am interested in any Caribbean, and I also hear Africa and South America has good fishing. I wouldn’t say I prefer bottom fishing, alough I find it much more interesting than trawling, since I trawled for twice as long as the simple (and laughable) pedalo fishing and caught less fish than in 10 minutes of the latter. Our party will be 3-4 people and would proffer a 14-day trip, with budgets of about £1000 per person.

If you have any stories of great fishing adventures abroad and any tips on location and operators I would be glad to hear of them. Also would you think it would be better to simply book a regular holiday and take our own equipment or book a solely fishing holiday. Maybe something with half fishing on a boat and half on beach would be good?

Pictures from Cuba to follow (when I figure out how to charge my digital camera)

Never heard of skinny water marlin before and a 2.5 metre baracuda must be touching record levels as the world record is aparently 6 feet long and 106lb

Cuba has a mix of phylum Chordata and subphylum Vertebrata, Blue barracuda and Great barracuda. The latter, which I cought (Are less elongated and have larger projecting lower jaws) grow upto 10ft (3 meters roughly), but I definatly wouldnt want to hook one that big!

I only wish I could have seen the Marlin fully before it took down half my rod!
