I don't know but I think you would get slightly less distance. Just keeping it at the top.

The 4-8oz casting weight means? The optimum weight for casting (include lead and bait) lays somewhere between those boundaries. It doesn`t mean you use a weight of between 4-8oz.

If you want to use a 3oz weight with such an outfit, combined with a small bait? You may find that the rod doesn`t compress enough to send the business end out very far?

A 2-6oz rated rod, can outperform a higher rated rod. When loaded with a small lead and bait.

So. If you want to use a 4-8oz rod to throw out a small bait with a 3oz weight. You`ll find yourself putting loads of wellie into the cast, to find that the bait ends up 50yds off the beach.

I don't think you should be casting bombs of any size. They have a habit of going bang.
