They have a news page here:

http://asdacares.gpalm.co.uk/environment/e...nment_load.html

"In 2005 we announced that we intended to dramatically change the way we source fish.

Within the next three to five years, ASDA will only stock wild-caught fresh and frozen fish from fisheries that meet the Marine Stewardship Council's (MSC) independent environmental standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries.

The decision means dozens of products bearing the MSC’s distinctive blue eco-label will start appearing on our shelves. As part of our new sustainable fish policy, we plan to stop selling swordfish within the next four months, having already removed shark, skate wings, ling, huss (dog fish) and Dover sole from sale.

We have also suspended the sale of North Sea cod while we work closely with EU Fisheries (DG Fish) and the North Sea Regional Advisory Committee to establish a stock recovery plan for the species. We will continue to sell Scottish-caught haddock in all our stores in Scotland.

ASDA is calling for the North Sea to be declared a marine conservation zone to preserve fish stocks for local fishing communities. We believe commercial fishing of the North Sea should be limited to local fishermen who depend on it for their sole income and who use recognised sustainable fishing practices. "

I always said Whitby could do with an ASDA. I’ve also heard rumours that locker trawlers of Whitby have gain a small (worldwide) but still a substantial amount of asda shares.

And while where talking about things hot of the press

I have also heard a rumour that alliance fish investigators (a subsidiary of locker trawlers) have been spotted going round housing estates in Whitby photographing illegally held alliance fish boxes in people’s gardens?

Photographs to be used in legal proceedings (depending whop you are) and also in a name and shame campaign run by the Whitby gazette.

Regards.

Probably prove populer with fishermen for now. But what if we ditched the eu and went alone. How would the fishermen feel if DEFRA said right were gonna pay attention to the scientists for one. No commercial fishing for cod, the mackerel fishery is closed untill it recovers, 300 pots each for lobster fishermen, were closing the herring spawn fishery, were upping mls on bass to 45 com, Prawn fishermen must use new anti discard technology.

IMO the fishermen want this as they see our government as more of a pushover than the eu one

Would they still cry for an eu exit or demand to be back in if our goivernemnt got tough on them ?.

What are the policies that will replace the current eu policies ?

I have heared this lets get out the eu thing before but noone thought any further than getting the spannish and french thrown out of our waters.

I suppose the fishermen would want a free for all ?

I suppose it is a wait and see game  But you can bet your last penny ASDA will not be the last ones to voice their opinions, once one shouts the others hate to be left out :D:D

The CFP has been a disaster for the British fishing industry.

It simple has not worked. Despite the years of decommissioning and stringent rules and regulations that have been imposed on the industry it has been a total shambles.

I don’t think that ASDA want Britain to pull out of the EU they just want the unsuccessful CFP abolished while there still is a fishing industry and more importantly still some fish left.

I think you have a wrong there John The only reason the cfp has been unsuccesfulis that none has taken any notice of it. Up untill Defra started enforcing the damn thing none abided by any of it. Two years after they sorted out enforcement people are asking "are the cod coming BAck?" People are saying the word recovery.

However I think its all pretty irrelevent. Europe isnt a pick and mix sweet shop where you can take the nice bits you like and leave the rest for the others, it doesnt work like that. If were out of europe it would have to be on everything. Only thing I see happening is us gett further in.

Im still interested on potential future policies. HAs anyone got any.

I was an ardent supporter in the early days of the EU, now days I am thinking the opposite.

Glennk give us a clue what the nice bits are
