UNHOOKING CARP QUESTION

just wondering if putting a carp on a old beach towel would do it any harm?

 

I havent done this yet and wont until i get some feedback from you pros so dont go yelling at me, I'm from the US and they dont sell unhooking mats around here because carp are looked at as just "giant goldfish"

If the towel was wetted first it would be ok. A sheet of foam inside an old pillow case would probably do a better job for protecting the fish on the bank.

One of the Foam mats sold for campers works fine, I wouldn't use a towel as it can "wipe off" the protective slime. You want something which is non absorbent, put the towel in a bin liner or rubbish sack.

 

One club I belonged to insisted on the rubbish sack cover for "health" reasons.

k well how about just a big trash bag? like a plastic liner for a rubbish can spread out?

I use a plastic trash bag on my boat since the carpet provides padding. For bank fishing, add a piece of foam to put inside and you are good to go.

Agreed with you there Den. But you can pick up cheap unhooking mats for a fiver these days if you look around

Not where he lives Andrew. I know of three places in the US where you can buy a proper unhooking mat. All of them do mail order business and sell only new (and imported so fairly pricy) items.

One thing I think you can get hold of with ease is a mattras that is used for a baby cot. It,s big enough and has foam in. I used one when I first started.
