humber fish kill

as some of you may know

lining the banks of the humber estury (south side) there is a number of power plants, these plants need to extract water from the river as a coolent and take gallons and gallons every day.

as the water is sucked into a inlet pipe along comes with it weed, drift wood and lots of flounders, small codling, cod, whiting, sole and scoolie bass along with tons of shrimp

the fish and rubbish are then filtered thru grids and then disposed of as they are partially fried by hot water from the plant

Tony Burman has taken it on himself to try and get something done about the declining flounder stocks in the river as the anglers have noticed a steep decline in the fish being caught.

it is estimated that 40tons of fish are being killed a year through the pipe intake from the one power plant

there has been meetings held with the powerplant and anglers and they have asked the anglers to come up with ideas of how to keep fish from entering the pipe

so....

any ideas anyone?

tony burman can be contacted on a.burman@ntlworld.com

in an ideal world, the coolant water would be a closed system & the waste heat from it would be used in a district heating system, but we like wasting energy in the u.k. especially if it means sodding up something else. :(

Dont know how the intake setup is there, but a mesh box surrounding the intake (far enough away to reduce the suction effect) would surely do the trick!. I think however, anything to do with cost will simply get you a " we are looking into it" answer!!. It needs to be brought into the public eye for anything to happen, environmentalists should be looking at things like this instead of toffs chasing foxes around the country!!! :) SDD

Macky, there's an interesting looking project, seeking customers to trial it, here:

Multidisc rotary travelling water screen developed by Geiger International GrnbH & Co. KG (Germany), marketed in the states by Taprogge America Corp. They hope it can reduce fish kills by 80% plus.

Has your mate contacted anyone at Newcastle Uni? as wasn't it them that carried out the work quantifying the level of kills?

I also thought about bubble curtains, and googling

bubble curtain fish intake

gets lots of hits.

Asking the anglers to come up with a solution to the power plant's environmental problems is the height of cheek. There is clearly plenty of established work on these systems. They need to commission an engineering consultancy with experience of doing this.
