a while ago there was a problem with ipod battieries being faulty, mines has this problem but cause its second hand i cant do anything about it, but atleast i can still plug it into a car charger and keep it powered on.

i think the only option is to get the battery replaced, its about £20 from maplins and you get 2 tools to open the ipod. i would use this as a last resort cause mines still charges it just doesnt hold a charge for long. might also want to try a firmware update from the apple mac website, it might just not be recognising that its a charger.

Also is it possible the cigarette lighter socket thing isnt working, try it in another car if you can.

The battery charges fine when connected to my computer.

The car charging sockets all work fine as I've charged my phone no problem using all 3 in car sockets.

I'll look into a fimware update [?] is this the same as uploading a new version of the itunes rubbish?

not realy its like a bios/software type thing it updates. it wouldnt happen to be a faulty charger (car charging cable)

im not even sure if it is the firmware thats the problem but its best to tackle it from all angles, a word of warning though, be prepared to lose all your music on the ipod as it wipes it clean, and you need a mains power supply to finish the update as it will ask you to insert it into mains. if you previously removed all your music from your pc/mac get some 3rd party software to transfer everything from ipod to pc/mac
