Handling pike

The Flying Tench

Recommended Posts

Im the same as some above, ive never used a glove because i like to be able to feel waht im doing but also some gloves can damage the gill rakers (chain mail gloves).

Grip solidly and dont give the fish anything to lever from and you shouldnt get cut............too badly.

Ive been had a few times but pike cuts never hurt as they are so clean a cut, its feeling faint from loss of blood that does ya

You can feel what you're doing with the gloves mentioned above. Scabby fingers aren't cool and neither is weils disease.

You make a good point about weils disease.

maybe carrying something like the wipes could be a good idea

I believe that weils disease usually enters the body through cuts or through the mouth.

I should think those wipes are to clean your fingers so you don't transfer the infection to your mouth when you eat your sandwiches, rather than to clean cuts.

to prevent damage from trashing you can place a biger fish between your knees(on ground), belly up and swiftly unhook it.

Now I would disagree with that! Despite Rambo's advice being 100% main stream.

I think this method causes more raker rash (and more importantly) torn membranes.Mainly as the fish can lever against you (no matter how firm you grip it) or the mat.

Much better to suspend it above the ground and away from your body. When it kicks just go with the flow!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
