Dear spinsters :D

I know this topic has been done to death, but in your opinion is there a better centrepin for the price than the Okuma Sheffield S1002? They're about £120. They seem to be very highly regarded and I'm trying to decide what to ask Santa for this year...

Thanks :)

I fancy the Sheffield as well but i have only recently bought the aventa Pro and can not justify replacing it.

I think the price reflects the benefits of economies of scale rather than a lower quality product.

Well, yes there is a better reel - and that's an Okuma Sheffield for £110 ! (I have seen them advertised for this somewhere, can't remember where).

There will always be the odd ebay bargain which would potentially get you what "could be considered" a better reel for the money. To be honest though, the difference between one quality centrepin and another is largely down to style and preference. After all, it's just a simple mechanism at the end of the day. It's not like you are paying for a fixed spool where you either do or do not get a baitrunner, metal body or plastic, one spool or three etc, 1 ball bearing or 11!

And everything I've read suggests the Okuma is an excellent pin. My only personal thing against it is that it's a ball-bearing 'pin, and I prefer plain-bearing. This is just personal preference though.

Does anyone one know if the black version of the Sheffield is available in the UK yet?

Hi, Andrew.

I got one of these a couple of weeks ago.

It is my first centrepin, so I am certainly no expert. All I can say is that the Sheffield is a truly marvellous thing. You may have seen my Spinaholics thread! It really is a joy to play with- the reel that is!

Using the Sheffield is a piece of cake, even for a learner. I loaded 8lb PowerPro braid on mine, and it is easy to handle and cast. I have used it twice- both times trotting a 4BB stick float at nearlyrod-length depth, and it was absolutely fine. I even managed to cast about 10 to 15 yards, with no trouble. I admit you need to be a little patient with minor linewrap tangles (round the seat fitting, etc.) but you will find that you get so chilled-out using it that this will hardly bother you when it occasionally happens!

I reckon you should pop down to your tackle shop and ask for a test-drive. I went to Davis Tackle at Christchurch, and they were mega-helpful. Once you get the thing in your hands, you will want to buy it, I swear. It as slick as an eel in a bucket of KY jelly.

Good luck with your future addiction....

What's interesting is that, though anglers are rarely surprised by a totally grim day, we nearly always maintain our optimism. We understand pessimism because our dreams are sometimes dented by the blows of fate, but always our hope returns, like a primrose after a hard winter. ~ C. Yates.

I struggle to believe that the Shefield can be any better than the Aventa Pro.Anyone who has used both care to comment?

My old Leeds wasnt playing well at Timsbury.Just wouldnt turn as freely as it normally does (clean and a drop of oil most likely wont go amiss!) had to keep feeding the line with my thumb. In all fairness its never done it before. However it did make me regret selling my "proper" pins.(for those who are new I sold my Areial,Dave Swallow and Stanton the other year to raise a bit of dough to clear some of my mortgage arears) The origonal plan was to use a bit out of the cash raised (and I must admit I did ok!) to buy a consolation Okuma Aventa Pro.Didnt happen as I decided my old Leeds would be ok.I have drooled over my brothers one ever since!

A couple of us have sugested it at various times but we really must have a "Pin In"! sod the fishing just pin spinning and casting. In the old days the closed season would have been a great time for such a social/teach in type get together but these days.....

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

they're both the same reel except that the sheffield as a different facia & the aventa pro has high precision bearings (ABEC 4/5) & the sheffield has german high precisson bearings which are the next rating (ABEC 5/6) but in use you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference,i know some in america do goto the trouble of upgrading the aventa pro to the sheffield bearings some even to (ABEC 7 ceramic's) but there rivers are quite different and run faster as they fish for stealheads ect and would be a bit of overkill for this country's rivers .

i have used both the pro's and used a friends sheffield but any increase in performance is negligible the sheffield looks better though.thats why i chose the aventa pro as i didn't think it was worth the extra amount to go for a sheffield and since they came out you can get the aventa pro's cheaper off e-bay (off traders) so as i'm more concerned with function (does it do the job required of it) over form ( not really bothered how it looks too much ) .

I had a look and play with an Aventa Pro in a shop this weekend and it's a beauty - nice looks, not too heavy, very free-spinning. I wonder if the Sheffield is really any better? If it's just a case of a different grade of bearings and different (worse, in my opinion) looks, I think the Aventa Pro is going to be hard to beat. Only £99 too :)

:black_eye: £99 a bit steep for a aventa pro :nonono: shop around or try e-bay :sneaky2: you should be able to get one cheaper :g: i think chris goddard is selling one of his
