Line opinions please

The situation, a shallow gin clear silty lake.

I`ve been using fluorocarbon mainline for a season on there but have lost faith in the stuff. Its just too brittle (Berkley Transition).

Its certainly done the job but the carp are few and far between and I`m starting to get paranoid that the line will let me down should I manage (one day) to hook one of the bigger ones!

Thats not a good mind set to have so the decision to change lines has been made.

However, I can`t decide whether to go for a clear line (Pro Gold) or a brown line (Sensor). One will be good considering the clear water, the other good when the lines pinned down on the deck.

Any opinions folks? I don`t want the line standing out like a sore thumb across the lake.

I always use Daiwa Sensor (15lbs BS) in brown and I find it pretty good.

I don't fish many lakes that are gin clear though plus the pike I'm after probably aren't as clever/wary as your carp.

I used to fish a similar sounding lake - it was an old estate lake, very shallow, tree-lined, clear water, and very silty. I used good old sensor and fished very light and very slack, usually close in but sometimes across to the far margin. I had my share of carp.

These days I'm a big fan of tungsten putty for carp and tench fishing. A few little blobs a rod-length behind the rig keeps it all nice and flat without the need for leadcore or tubing. I avoid flourocarbon too.

BTW hemp and sweetcorn in the margins seems to be a good approach for lakes like this.

PS this was with a soft braid hooklength (Merlin).

i just use the cheapest bulk stuff ,it may not be the best but it stretches a little and has a larger diameter making it more abbrasion taking and as i only use a small lead it never cracks off ,you can buy the expensive stuff with no stretch but you have to treat it better and replace it more often .

on the other hand i'm a tight fisted git so cheap makes me cheerfull ,i have a few very expensive brands bought in sales but they will never be used !why break the habit of a lifetime
