Well I’ve a good play with the bivvy in the back garden today and overall I’m reasonably pleased with it. I’ll only be using it occasionally and not in the winter months so it’ll do the job but for hardcore overnighters I think it has some shortcomings.

From a first time bivvyer’s point of view these are the good points;

Quick and easy to put up the inner capsule once you’ve done it a couple of times. If you want to leave it at that on a bright sunny day then you’ll have a nice cool place to shelter. Apart from the groundsheet it seems very robust and should last a good while. The overwrap lets some light trough so if it’s raining and you’re stuck inside it’s not a gloomy place to be, very easy to put it on too. Very spacious but it should be with only me in it.

The less good points;

It’s not really a 2 man bivvy, more like 1½. You can fit two standard sized bedchairs in it but that leaves precious little space for anything else. It’s heavy you wouldn’t want to carry it too far. The groundsheet seems thin to me but this might be the norm, maybe it’ll last for ages. The real bugbear is water pooling, I gave a it a good dousing with the hosepipe and found water collecting on the roof and porch, at worst it’ll come in eventually, at best you’ll get a soaking first thing if you don’t remember to duck;

For what I want it’ll be perfect but at the RRP price if I needed a true all year round shelter I’d be looking elsewhere….and I can’t figure out what this bit is for;

Note on keeping cool, single skin bivvies get really hot in the sun, a double skin will be cooler but still would be uncomfortable if it's proper summer weather.
