New fly fisher

Hi, I've just been given a fly fishing outfit and need some advice. I have a 7' 5/6# rod and wonder what this rod will be best suited to. I will probably be learning on still waters fishing for trout

Hi Graham

Welcome to "proper" fishing :D

Your 7 ft rod is a bit on the short side for fishing stillwater, a rod of that length is most commonly used for fishing small streams and rivers. As a beginner you may find it hard to use and benefit from something around 9'. 6wt is about right

Start with a 6wt floating line but don't get anything from Airflo, whatever the hype.

A good line is about the most important piece of tackle you will get. A poor rod will cast a good line better than a good rod will cast a poor line, and nothing will cast an Airflo floater :yeah:

Might I suggest that you ask at your local stillwater about lessons. It's money well spent and you get the chance to try out a few different tackle combinations.

If you want a good deal on some tackle try sending an email to Mike Barrio. I was at his fishery the other day and he recently aquired a job lot of very good hardly used tackle which he is selling at very good prices.

Contact him on

Thanks for the info lads, especially about the line. I have two lines: RT ENERGY WF6S and RT ENERGY WF6F. The lines are new and not marked but from what I've learned in the last 48 hours I think they are Ron Thompson Energy-Weight Forward-#6-1 x Floating and 1 x Sinking. They seem to have very little memory in them but I have little knowledge to compare them with so would be grateful for any advice as to the suitability of these lines for a learner. I'm not a "tackle tart" but I wouldn't mind splashing out on better line if it is better to learn with than struggle with inferior line.

I've managed a few leads to find an instructor at local fisheries and I'll keep you informed as I progress.

Last year I learned to catch tope and common skate and the thrill of landing new species is fantastic and I cant wait to become a competent fly angler and land fish with my new skills

Kind regards

One more question if no one minds.....

I've been looking at fly rods and noticed that, for example that a 9' rod is often split into 3 sections as oposed to 2 sections if this was a light sea fishing rod. Is this for convenience of packing/traveling or is it the norm without effecting the action of the rod?

Looking forward to your replies

Never tried a Ron Thompson line so can't say. Some cheap lines are OK and some are total cr*p. You won't know until you try. My opinion, the best cheap line is the Shakespeare Worcester.

It is normal for fly rods to be in 3 or more sections. 4 sections being quite normal for a 9". I have a 7 piece travel rod which is nice as it goes in a suitcase when your going on holiday :)

With modern materials and manufacture, having multiple pieces doesn't affect the action over much.

I was in your position last year, and tried cheap and cheerful lines. The one i got on with and would highly reccomend is the Leeda Galion. You can pick them up really cheaply if you look around ie <£15. Saying that i've never used Worcestershire lines so couldn't compare them for you.
