BBC Fish Dumping Video

I saw a video clip on the BBC News this morning of a prawn fisherman dumping dead fish (most about six inches long) back into the sea. According to the new dummy fish minister Jonathan Shaw this is a good reason to increase cod quotas!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7102241.stm

I'd have thought that if a prawn fisherman is catching hundreds of undersized fish, the answer is to look at improving his equipment.

Can you provide the link where shaw has said that there should be an increase in the cod quota, thanks.

I also thought that the idea was to leave these on the ground to repair the breeding stock. Has he received new science from some where. He is also a busy man at the mo so there is no point trying to converse with him unless you are someone important.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

It's a video link so I don't know how to post it. It's on the top right hand side of the page I posted, where it says "Video and Audio News".

Thanks for that Colin, i did watch it. already sent an email to defra. Watched the discard video and the trawler guys were saying that this is a disaster, i did not see any of the larger live cod being thrown back only baskets of small dead ones, afterwards. If there is no quota as said, why did they not just put them back over the side wriggling instead of shuffling them about for the camera? I did see three prawn, in the haul, what was they fishing for or was it stage managed? Ohh dear, just noticed the rather large size of the mesh for the prawn fishing cod end? Is that correct? They said it was a crime in what they are doing and it is immoral. What is the answer then?

So Wurzel, Binatone, Challenge, Jaffa.

How many times did you post onto here saying there was no discards from the prawn fishery ? when it suits the commercials the evidence is pulled like a rabbit from a magicians hat, and you expect us to take you seriously.

With regards to Johnathon Shaw after the bass mls and now proposing cod quota increase its clear he is a sellout to the NFFO. Laughable isnt it.

It makes you wonder just where Jonathan Shaw gets his scientific advice. The advice on cod from ICES as of one month ago is this

We also observe a decrease in mortality which is a welcome signal in response to the management efforts from the past year. But it is not enough. We recommend constraining catches in 2008 to less than 50% of the 2006 catches. And this should include measures to constrain discards and illegal catches. This should give these young fish the opportunity to grow and to reproduce and thereby to contribute to the recovery of this important fish stock.

You get the impression that everything Jonathan Shaw knows about fish and fishing he learnt on his "fact finding" trip round the commercial fishing ports last week.

This government is a pile of s**t, not only has it finished my livelyhood, theother month it gave away 24 billion pounds of our tax money to some **** bank of the north never to be seen again, it has also today given away my my national insurance number- bank account info and everything else concerning my id, giving access to any crook in the world who would like take advantage of it, and now i am in the process of losing my home, anybody who voted these monkeys in last time needs their brains testing and i would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart.

If he had adequate quota then discards would have been minimal, although I would have expected to see more prawns.

I doubt the NFFO has little to do with it they have very few under ten meter boats on their books and its the under ten meter boats that are having most quota problems at the moment.

Also it has little to do with EU quotas as he stated in the clip but more to do with DEFRA's incompetence or more likely their plan to squeeze out most of the bigger boats under ten meters in the fleet, a method in their madness.

Having said that, no doubt all boats fishing the North Sea are having or foresee a growing problem with catching more cod than their quotas allow, a 15% increase in cod quota is not enough to generate any more targeted cod fishing, there is very little actual cod fishing done these days, it would help to ease the problem of dumping cod caught while fishing for other fish.

Dumping marketable fish over the side is like somebody asking you to take out £100 from your wallet tearing it up and flushing it down the loo., and when as now it effects small inshore boats including little single handed boats its just bloody ridicules.

You are always very quick to condemn Glenn perhaps you could come up with a more sensible solution to the problem of catching to much fish, or perhaps you would like to see a complete annihilation of all commercial fishing.

I fish to live and live to fish.
