Only thing I can think of is that he maybe changed his forum layout options to the linear format, maybe.

Happened to me for just a short while recently.

 

I changed nothing, and it came back to normal all by itself.

The only time it's ever happened to me, and how it probably happened to you, is if somebody has posted a link to the linear version of a thread and you've followed it. It seems to change your cookie when you do that :)
