can any one suggest a good feeder rod for bream thanks

Hi mate

My favoured method of fishing is tip rod/feeder fishing and I have done this for many years over different stillwaters and rivers for many species.

My favourite species for a few years now has been bream.

I have about 30 tip rods that are all used for different situations. If you just want a general rod then most modern ones are fine if you have a specilal apllication then give us a few more details.

I used to own a Shakespeare Team Carbon Multitip which was a belting tip rod for bream. Wish I'd never sold it !

Lovely through action 12 footer, 4 sensitive tips in translucent green showed up the shyest of bites, enough grunt in the butt to cast a 2oz feeder for miles. Don't ever remember cracking off feeders, or pulling out of fish.

Perhaps not man enough for big river use, but great in all other respects. I think they retailed for a ton plus back in the day.

I've tried loads of times to buy it back without any success, such is life.

A little more info would be helpful Deany2. Bream vary in size from a few oz to about 20lb, the distance you may be looking to cast may vary from a few yards to a 100 yards and the size of feeder you are looking to cast may vary a lot. All these things and maybe a few more will affect what rod will suit your bream fishing.

You could just go for a mid action feeder rod with a nice soft (glass) tip (even a cheap one will catch lots of bream), but going by some of the replies your getting so far it may help if you also let us know how deep your pockets are. :)

Rather than advise you on one particular rod, what I would suggest is you go into a tackle shop and try a few out. The most important thing you are looking for is a soft through action. Bream have soft lips/mouths and as such you need a rod that won't put the hook through. The second thing to consider is the distance you will be fishing for bream. Generally, a good shoal of bream will invariably be a distance out on a lake, and even on bigger rivers they are more likely to be along the far shelf, either half way up, or at the bottom. On a canal they could even be hugging the far tree line on top of the shelf.

So, depending on how far out, be it a lake or river, you need it to be reasonably strong and at least 11 foot. The most important thing you are looking at is a soft through action. Most tackle shops will let you 'play' with their rods. This is without doubt the best way. Find a rod that suits you. Price isn't always the best guide. I specialise in big bream and my rods were under 75 quid each. Incidently, I use wychwood 11' 1 1/2lb 'Rogues'. I have had these for about 3 years. I use them for fishing farely close and at distance. They will handle a 'lump' and also be gentle with a small fish. Importantly, if you pick up a carp or tench, they will handle these too.

Overall, it really is about what feels right. As long as you know you want a soft through action rod, one that bends all the way down to the handle, you won't be far off.

Friday evening forum starting mid March 2012. Come in for a coffee, and a chat, or advice. We'll be talking rigs, tactics, venues, and anything else fishing related. Heiniken say's, probably one of the best stocked shops in east anglia... Match, sea, fly, carp, specimum. If we ain't got it, we'll get it. Look for the new Frank Warrich gel baits coming soon...
