We call them Snaglers hear, I love them as bass, thornback bait. And on light gear they are both fun and easy to catch at times.

Fished Chesil Beach this year on Hot summers day. Groundbaited the milpond still sea and after 20 minutes letting the ground bait take affect hooked 22 gars in a two hour period!!! Once you have them in front in very still water they seem to stay - Fantastic bait for Bass and excellent food as well!! Good luck next summer...........

Can't help you with the sea-going variety but if you just want to catch some gar and don't mind a longish trip, I'd be happy to take you after some of the fresh water ones.
