Pc will not connect to internet

Recommended Posts

I sent a PC back to Factory settings then tried to re-install its wireless dongle.

The CD installs but does not give the plug in device message and does not

offer to finish.

Have been down to the store and got an ethernet cable, this show the pc is connected

to the network at 100 mps....but will not connect to the internet...just gets stuck at

"Website found. Waiting or reply..." and a blank screen.

What am i doing wrong? is it a case of school boy error, or is the PC duff in some way.

Have got til DEC 8 till the warrenty runs out ;)

Cheers for any advise

B)

Firewall is off btw

What problem caused you to have to reset it back to the defaults?

You probably have to set up networking from the beginning. It probably doesn't know which servers to use for internet access. The easy way to find out is to open a command window (start>run>cmd and OK) then do the command

ipconfig /all

If it is working you should see results similar to these although with your ISP and DNS server rather than mine.

Yup. There is your problem. All of those are pointing at your local router.

That is fine for the gateway and DHCP - normal in fact.

However, without access to a DNS server, you would have to reach any web site by using its IP address since DNS is required to translate names like Anglersnet.co.uk to a numeric IP that your browser can find.

You need to manually set up your networking using the actual internet address of the DNS servers your ISP uses. It should look more like mine but with the server IP addresses for your ISP.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :24.25.5.147

You also need to change

DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : Belkin

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Belkin

so they use the name of your ISP rather than the name of your router.

In my case, my ISP is carolina.rr.com and that is the info I have in my settings.

I think i better phone Tiscali at the weekend, when i have some time.

Strange i just fired up a gaming (Batman) computer for the sprogs

down loaded the wireless dongle straight off and connected to the internet no problem <_<

We have 6 computers connected to the router, its just this one pc that refuses :P

The network settings on all the PCs should be the same (absent some IP v6 ones that will be missing from the others but are not important since home PCs are all still using IP v4).

Check what a working PC is using and do ye so likewise.

Do an ipconfig /all on a working machine and post it.
