Satchmo, if you are going in the Spring, before Memorial Day weekend, you should have no need to prebook any fishing.

The fishing is good at this time, as it is in Sept/Oct.

Shop around for your Charter Skipper and compare rates.

The fishing is good most everywhere, the Guide/Skipper improves the experience if he is a nice bloke, but he will rarely have any secret spots etc.

They can quickly tell if you know what you are doing, but don,t be afraid to "learn".

Remember the flats fishing is very active, in that you are constantly casting lures.

Don,t ignore the half day, or evening trips.

They are cheaper, less tiring and can be very productive.

Go with an open mind, relax and you will have a great time. :)

Cranfield, there you are, perfect timing. Thanks for the advice. Could you recommend any skippers though? and is there any good basic accommodation rather than the expensive beachfront condo's?

Thanks

Paul

Paulg:

http://www.reelbusycharters.com/ - has quite a bit of info. And you could always ask on this forum - http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=9

Very friendly people on there.

You really ought to try the forum Paulg recommended.

Bear in mind that we have more available productive water so US anglers are less shy about giving details and they will certainly be aware of good places to stay and good skippers to fish with.

Satchmo, how many in your party ?

Any children going ?

If you are a large family group with children, renting a house, can actually work out cheaper and be more convenient.

Whats your budget ?

Email, or PM me if you wish.

Think about staying at Marathon (bigger place), just along the road.

Its generally cheaper than Islamorada.

I wouldn,t presume to recommend a Guide, I haven't met a bad one in the US yet and I fish there twice a year, for about 5-6 weeks a trip.

just thinking there, you don't need to get on a boat to enjoy some great fishing,

the first time i fished in the keys i was with my family, we stayed in a small place on the island called tavanier, just before islamorda, it was on the gulf side and had its own boat dock, under the dock was jumping with mangrove snappers, trigger fish, angelfish, small cudas, i even caught a small nurse shark about 20lb on a tiny spinning rod with 6lb line through to the hook, some of the snappers were about 2lb and fought like a 4lb coalfish would, what a scrap, you didn't need anything fancy for bait, we found the best thing was bits of ham and turkey anything meaty infact, just make sure you have plenty of hooks as the small barracudas appear like lightening and bite your hooks off without you feeling a thing.

 We could probably do an AN trip between us, out of the US holidays and go self drive skiffs, probably quite reasonable. Let the FPO and kids go to Disney World etc and we go fishing. :P
