If the rod is sold for £150, are SOS going to give the winning bid £50 rebate.

i really can't understand the logic of this point, can anyone else?

For a donated gift to be put up for auction, with a reserve price, devalues the gift. Surely to start off at zero would then find the true value of the Gift.

John, I too totally disagree. We're not talking about a secondhand item that has a fluid value that varies from day to day. Instead we're talking about something with a known value, that has already been established in the marketplace.

Peggy and I put a paperweight on eBay in aid of the tsunami appeal. It had a reserve equal to our normal retail price of £96. To sell it for any less would have devalued the item. Not surprisingly it attracted a lot of bids and sold for considerably more than the reserve price. We received none of the proceeds and even paid the postage to the USA. It was our way of contributing more to the tsunami appeal than a cheque - and I'm sure the beneficiaries would have preferred it this way!

I can thus see why those concerned may have found your remarks offensive. I hope you now do so as well.

Only thing I would have though was that was the person who listed originally was indeed experienced why did they list with a reserve?? Why not at a reasonable start and on a charity auction?? As I understand it eBay will do something towards the fees??

But I have to say John I too disagree with you, especially as the rods arec clearly worth the money, but at the end of the day each to there or her own!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

I admit to making a few mistakes as an ebay noob but the auction on the first rod ends in two hours and it seems to be going well. The person doing the listing had no experience of charity auctions.

See it here

Two hours to get yourself a bargain :D
