Haven't had so much fun in ages.

Was out on the middle Severn last night with a mate. The water was low and tap-water clear although looking at Riverapp, it was clearly rising a little while we fished.

It was the usual summer affair, fishing lures to target chub, perch, trout and (if we could find any that haven't been poached and eaten) pike.

My mate almost always fishes a simple size 2 or 3 Mepps whereas I prefer to ring the changes and as we were buddy fishing with both of us in the same peg, rather than leapfrogging, there was much banter.

Kit was almost identical (I built both rods on matching blanks) so it came down to choice of lure, line fished and who could muscle into the best position for casting.

We both caught fish on spinners, my experiments with soft plastics and swimbaits failed miserably but I had the best of the chub with some crackers smashing into tiny little wakebaits fished in the ruffled shallow water below rock bars and fords.

I finished with all four of the above species and half a dozen chub in the 3lb range as well as plenty of smaller chub.

The pike was only a little jack about a pound and a half.

We also snuck up on a fallow deer doe and got within 20m before she realised we were there and high tailed it into the woods.

We finished the night with beer and curry.
