Demand For Angling For Youth Development Increasing

Following recent press articles about the Angling For Youth Development Trusts, new educational packages enquiries are coming in from Schools throughout the UK that are wishing to add the course to their school curriculum.

To help service this need, AFYD are seeking experienced angler’s to join their instructional teams as Instructors, Coaches, and coaching assistants.

Project Development Manager Grev Humphrey said

“We are hoping to build a team of 300 new Level 2 qualified coaches and Instructors throughout Scotland over the next 3 years to service the demand for our programmes that we are receiving from schools and local authorities.  We are looking for Angler’s from all 3 disciplines to come together to help us introduce future generations of angler’s to our sport”.

Over the next 4 months AFYD are launching new programmes in West Lothian, North Lanarkshire, Dumfries, Ayrshire, Aberdeenshire, East Lothian and Clackmananshire and increasing our instructional teams in Renfrewshire, Angus, and Perthshire.

Whilst the emphasis is working with young people and teaching them the finer attributes of the sport, AFYD Instructors, Coaches, and assistants have the opportunity to progress their own skills and obtain their Level 2 Coaching and Instructors qualifications through their involvement in the programme.

Ian Williams, Renfrew Project Leader, says  “Since we formed the Paisley and Renfrew AFYD we have gone from strength to strength, and now have a waiting list of young people wishing to participate in our courses.   We are working very closely with the Scottish Federation of Sea Angler’s Coaching team to teach all methods of angling to the youngsters involved in our programme and next year should be delivering the new courses into the Secondary Schools in Renfrewshire.  Our instructional team are all volunteers and we are always looking for more people to come and help.   The more anglers who can help deliver the AFYD programme will ensure that we can teach many more young people to fish”.

In the modern world where child protection issues are daunting, many people shy away from getting involved in youth work as it is so complicated to get the approvals and insurances in place, the advantage of AFYD is that it is all taken care of by the Trust.

AFYD projects engage people of all backgrounds and abilities within a community and helps break down the perceived social barriers between them.
