News Release From The European Anglers Alliance

Several entities representing the recreational anglers at sea gathered on the 2nd of August to discuss the Blue Fin Tuna and other issues of importance for Europe’s recreational sea anglers.

The meeting took place along the tuna tagging and competition event “DEFI MEDITERRANEEN 2009” organized by the “Thon Club du Cap d’Agde” under the aegis of the FMPR, Federación Mediterránea para una Pesca Responsible.

Organizations representing several European countries were present: The EAA, European Anglers Alliance, EFTTA, European Fishing Tackle Trade Association, FMPR, Federación Mediterránea para una Pesca Responsible, the CEPMRR, Confederación Española de Pesca Marítima de Recreo Responsable, the BGI, Big Game Italia and FNPPSF, Fédération Nationale des Pêcheurs Plaisanciers et sportifs de France.

The participants unanimously felt that there is a great need for more communication as to promote responsible recreational fishing at sea and to improve the image. It was also agreed to continue and intensify our collaboration with scientists and NGOs. Modification of European legislation is also required to make it more coherent and accessible. Significant support from the industry (boating, tackle manufacturers and other angling dependant businesses) is essential for the establishment of a major communication campaign in all European countries concerned to enhance the image of ‘responsible recreational fishing’.
