Cashel Trout Fishery Annual Competition

Cashel Trout Fishery, now in its tenth year, had a brilliant turnout for our annual competition.  The weather was just what anyone could have wished for, slightly overcast with a gentle breeze.  Anglers came from as far away as England, Donegal and Fermanagh in an effort to take home the perpetual cup and trophies which were sponsored by Michael Mc Closkey (Vicky) who also hails from Dungiven.  Nineteen very keen anglers arrived with us bright and early on Saturday morning in preparation for the ‘big’ day.  Assorted lures, ranging from ace of spades to GH daddies did the business on the day.  A total of fifty-nine trout were brought to the bank with everyone watching for the winning trout to appear.

Prizes were awarded as follows:
1st prize Heaviest single trout 10lb 4ozs – Joe Donnelly (Limavady)
2nd prize Heaviest bag of trout 16lb 9ozs – Ryan Young (Limavady)
3rd prize Runner up heaviest bag of trout 10lb 11¼ozs – Alfie Sheppard (Garvagh)

Trout FishermanJoe Donnelly caught four trout altogether using a black lure while Ryan Young caught five, the bag limit, using white nomads.  Alfie Sheppard used fritz to catch his five trout.  Derry’s James McFeely also managed the bag limit of five trout which took an orange fritz.  Denis Sweeny (Kilrea), John Hasson (Dungiven) and Martin Bradley (Dungiven) all banked five trout each using white fritz and zonkers.  Pearse Doherty (Maghera) bagged four trout while Billy Mc Laughlin (Derry) bagged three.  Most anglers bagged a couple of trout for their efforts.

Eight year old Matthew Begley (Limavady) bagged one trout weighing 2lb on a yellow cat.  Brian Duffy (Limavady) released seven trout which fell to bloodworms and buzzers.  Stephen Gurney (Limavady) released four on buzzers while Billy Hazlett (Derry) released seven trout which fell to dries and nymphs.  Aidy Askin also from Derry released eleven trout which took wee black spiders.  Jim Crawford, on his first visit to Cashel released five trout which took buzzers.
