Match fishing news from the Angling Trust

The third Angling Trust & Canal & River Trust Stillwater Championship qualifier match was fished on the picturesque Clattercote Reservoir near Daventry on Saturday 22nd June 2013.

The previous weeks weather had been sunny and warm and competitors practising for the match had made some good catches of carp. However, on the day of the match it was very overcast with a threat of rain and a strong wind blowing down the reservoir and cooling down the water. The match was pegged on both the left and right hand banks with the low numbers possibly being the preferred area to draw. The main question was which level in the water the fish would be feeding as this would determine tactics. As it turned out different methods proved successful for the top three anglers.

Dale Haywood, Jamie Wilde, Peter Wood, David Perry and Paddy McMahon. The winning weight went to Dale Haywood (Barnsley) fishing peg 41. Dale caught nine carp totalling 29.320 kg fishing a method feeder and using pellet as hookbait. His best fish was about 4 kilos and fish came in short bursts of feeding activity during the day.

Second place went to Jake King (Miracle baits) with a weight of 19.320 kg from peg 37. Jake had no luck fishing open water so he switched to paste in the margins which resulted in five carp and two skimmer bream. However, Jake could have easily been the match winner as he lost ten carp that snagged him under the boards that circle this water, a hazard suffered by several other people in the match. In third place was Paddy McMahon (St. Albans) who had 16 kg from peg 33. Paddy had six carp and four skimmers fishing a PVA bag on a straight lead. The best weight from the high numbers was fourth placed Jamie Wilde (Bag’em) on peg 117 using a bagging waggler to land five carp for 15.800 kg.
