Andrew Willis from the Slaney River Trust reports on recent Salmon fishing trends on the RIVER SLANEY for the month of April.

The river fished well during the month of April with a rough count suggesting that just under 200 fish were caught. Like the previous month fish were caught along the full length of fishable water, with the majority of fish falling between the town of Bunclody and Ballycarney Bridge.

Water levels were good during the first three weeks but fell in the last week of April meaning that some of the lower water beats closer to Enniscorthy started to come into their own. A few fish were also caught in Enniscorthy town below the bridge. Shrimp flies accounted for most fish, with popular patterns being the Cascade, the Yellow Shrimp and the Garry Dog.

The Slaney River Trust continues to promote Catch and Release and estimates suggest that between one third to one half of fish caught are being put back. The Trust will undertake further habitat works from May onwards in a bid to increase the number of spawning fish returning to the river. The response to the Central Fisheries Board’s ‘scale sample’ collection has been positive, with good returns facilitating a thorough DNA analysis of Slaney salmon.

From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

30/4/06 Lough Currane saw some great fishing both on the fly and the troll today, and as always I will leave the best to last, there were two Salmon caught on the troll by Mr Gerry O’Sullivan fishing with his son, also Mr David Stacey caught a fine Salmon, also on the troll, and I see on www.loughcurrane.com there were two more Salmon caught but this has to be confirmed, but fish of the day goes to Mr Steve Bullock of the UK who caught a fine specimen Sea Trout of 11 lbs. 5 ozs. on the fly, on a size 12 Kingmill, which is the record for Lough Currane and his Gillie Mr John Murphy and our Manger of the Waterville Fishery was telling me what a fight he had, and considering it was Steve’s first time Sea Trout fishing it makes it a bigger achievement and one he will never forget and I can tell you there was great party in the Lobster Bar, so congratulations to both Steve and his Gillie John, and if you want to know more about their battle or you would like to hire his services, because Mr John Murphy esq. has captured the 2006 specimen crown? You can contact Mr John Murphy at www.loughcurrane.com Wind southwest light to fresh all-day and overcast with light rain all day.
29/4/06 there were a good few boats for the May Bank Holliday weekend, and there was only one 7.5 lbs. Salmon caught this evening on the troll in Capall by my good self. Wind northwest light to fresh and bright and sunny all day with little to no cloud.
28/4/06 all quiet on the southwest front with very slack northeast wind blowing and bright sunshine all day and at least we fishers have a good excuse for not producing my Noble gentlemen.
27/4/06 there was one 12 lbs. Salmon caught on the troll by Mr Peter Mc Neill fishing with his Gillie Mr Brod O’Sullivan of Stella Maris, Guest House Waterville, and for the rest of us Anglers, no comment. Wind north all day and bright sunshine with hardly a cloud in sight.

26/4/06 Both Salmon and Sea Trout were keeping a low profile or you could say we fishers can’t fish. Wind west-southwest then veered northwest light all day and overcast all day.

25/4/06 very slack in the Salmon department, but there were three fine Specimen Sea Trout caught one at 6.5 lbs. was caught on the troll by Mr Otto Dieters of Germany, with his Gillie Mr Mike Dwyer, the second was caught on the fly by Mr Tadgh Lyne of Killarney, and his fine specimen Sea Trout weighed in at 7 lbs. 9 ozs. and just for the record this is the first Specimen Sea Trout to be caught on the fly? This season so congratulations to Tadgh, especially considering the conditions were not his favour, which in my book makes it a bigger achievement, and there was also a catch and release of a specimen Hen Sea Trout of 7 lbs. 2 ozs. by Mr Edward Sivyer of the UK, he also caught a fine 5 lbs. 6 ozs.  Sea Trout which he also released, both fish were caught on a claret Dabbler size 10, Edward was fishing with his gillie Mr Roger Baker and of www.cloghvoola.com Wind southwest all day, light to fresh and overcast all day with the odd shower.
24/4/06 my noble gentlemen were keeping a low profile today. Wind southwest fresh to strong and heavy rain in the afternoon, and it has made a small flood. That is all the News from your Gillie and the Waterville fishery. No spin no Fly’s just Facts.

WRFB Angling Report 2 May 2006
GALWAY WEIR
While there may not have been many fish caught this week, the quality of the fish themselves was certainly exceptional, with some fine spring salmon showing up. On the 26th Gary Kilroy from Mullingar, fishing the spinner landed a nice 9 lbs fish, with John Lappen from Bristol going slightly better the next day, taking a 9.5 lbs fish on shrimp. Fish of the season so far went to Waterford man Eddie Murphy on the 28th. Fishing the spinner, he hooked and landed a magnificent 17.5 lbs fresh-run springer, silver as a new coin and with a few sea lice still attached. On the 30th Dublin tackle dealer Pat Cleere landed a beautiful 12-pounder on the fly, and the same day Billy Campbell from Co. Down landed a 14.5 lbs fish, also on the fly.
The water is now perfect for flyfishing and this method should see more fish caught over the coming weeks. Spring salmon continue to run the river, and the grilse should start to appear in couple of weeks time. Prospects for salmon fishing look great.

LOUGH MASK
There are good hatches of olives in most of the bays at the moment, with fishing at the weekend described as very good. 121 anglers caught 282 trout for 392 lbs. in 248 rod-days, with fish to 7.39 lbs. among them. This was in spite of very bright conditions on a couple of days. Wetfly took most fish, with olive nymphs and buzzer patterns most successful. 82 anglers competed in the Ballinrobe and District Anglers 2-day competition, landing 222 trout for a weight of 314 lbs. Gerry O’Brien from Ballinrobe took first place, with a fine catch of 13 fish for 18.40 lbs, including 8 fish taken in the bright sunshine on Saturday, when many other anglers struggled. Michael McDermott from Ballyhaunis was second, with 11 fish for 14.92 lbs, including 10 landed on Sunday, and John Burke was third, with 11 trout for 13.68 lbs. The heaviest fish was taken by Pat Noone from Co. Meath, with a fine trout of 7.39 lbs, while other anglers to land good fish were Irvine Marshall, who had a fine fish of 5.19 lbs, and Tim Corbett had a fish of 4.84 lbs.

LOUGH CORRIB
The TAFI organised Connacht Cup competition was held on Saturday from the Commercial Boat Club at Woodquay in Galway. With 51 anglers competing in bright sunshine, prospects were not good, but they managed to land 53 fish for 109.95lbs. Top individual rod was Martin Murphy from Ballindiff, with 4 trout for 11.5lbs. Padraic Fahy from the Collimamuck club was second with 6 trout for 9.65lbs, and Toby Bradshaw was third, with 5 trout for 5.88lbs. James Kelly from Oughterard landed the heaviest fish at 3.9lbs, and top team honours went to Moycullen, who had 11 trout for 21.7lbs.

LOUGH CARRA
There were fair hatches of light and dark olives at times during the week, and the first mayfly hatch was spotted in Moorehall Bay on Saturday. 8 anglers landed 7 trout in 13 rod-days, with olive bumble and other olive patterns rising most fish. A lot of fish were reported rising during olive hatches, although they proved difficult to catch.  Joe Conroy from Ballinrobe and Emmet Stagg from Kildare had 2 trout for 4 lbs. in one day to wetfly. With fish moving to fly hatches and mayfly beginning to appear fishing should improve on Carra over the next couple of weeks.

WESTPORT LAKES
Brown trout have been stocked into Moher, Aille and Kinlooey Loughs last week, in preparation for the 2006 season, and boats are now available on these fisheries. Moy Estuary

Sea Trout fishing has commenced on the Moy estuary. Judd Ruane and Harry Feeney caught 16 trout of which they retained 6 and released 10, all taken on mackerel strip. Fishing should pick up on the estuary over the coming weeks, weather permitting.

Loughs Conn and Cullin

Fishing on Conn was adversely affected by northerly winds and bright sunshine at times making conditions difficult for fly fishing. Nonetheless, 87 trout were recorded for the week.  Matt Gurr and a party of seven anglers had 10 trout on 28 May and Eamonn Ross, Cavan, had an excellent day’s fishing with 8 trout on general wet flies. The Pratt Cup was fished on Sunday, 30, April and 40 anglers accounted for 19 trout. Joe Quinn had the heaviest bag with 3 trout weighing 4.74 lbs. Guests of Pontoon Bridge Hotel reported 10 trout for their week and guests of Healys Hotel had some good sport on Lough Cullin where there was a good hatch of olives. Local anglers, Michael Monaghan and Gary Coakley had 5 trout on Cullin to olive patterns.

Lough Gill/River Bonet

Fishing was quiet on Lough Gill this week with just two salmon reported.  John Kennedy had a 10 lbs. salmon on Saturday and Kenneth Conway had one weighing 8 lbs. on Sunday.

Ballisodare River

The new season opened on Ballisodare on Monday, I May with 25 salmon reported on opening day.  Further details in next week’s report.

Carrowmore Lake

Following a lull in activity during the middle of last week, during periods of bright sunshine, there was excellent fishing on Carrowmore at the weekend and about 35 – 40 salmon were caught for the week. All were caught on fly and averaged 7 lbs. but the catch included some salmon in the 10/11 lbs range. The adjoining Owenmore River produced just one salmon, a fish of 9 lbs., taken by Leitrim angler, Brian Fitzgerald.

Newport River/Lough Beltra

Beltra produced two salmon for the week on the Newport House side. Michael Dolan had one at 11 lbs. and Sean Dolan had one of 8 lbs. On the out flowing Newport River, Dave Tucker had a nice salmon of 10 lbs.

Ballin Lough

The new season opened on Ballin Lough on Monday, 1 May in very bright sunshine and squally winds, which made angling difficult. However, 22 rods accounted for 22 trout. John Shaughnessy had 5 with the best weighing 5.5 lbs. Niall Fallen had 5 trout including a fine brown trout weighing 5.5 lbs. and a rainbow trout at 4.5 lbs. Vincent Roche and Alan McGurdy had 5 trout of which two were returned and three, averaging 1.5 lbs., retained. Prospects on this lake look excellent for the coming weeks.  Access is strictly limited and, in order to book a boat, intending anglers should contact Mrs. Gill at the lake (tel. 098-26128).

Lynsey Clarke reports:
RIVER DROWES – Monday 10th to Sunday 30th April 2006.

The fishing has remained good on the Drowse over the past 3 weeks. Water levels have steadily dropped over the past 10 days. However, heavy rain at the weekend and as It write should ensure Melvin and hence the Drowse rises again. The first of the early grilse are making an appearance in the river (and in Lough Melvin).  A good number of spring salmon in the 12 to 15 lbs. bracket have been recorded for the past 2 weeks with fly and shrimp accounting for most fish. Effective fly patterns have been, Cascade Junction, shrimp, Ally Shrimp, Willie Gunn, and Garry Dog. The most productive pools have been Lennox’s, Mill Pool, Blackwater, The Washstones, Money Hole, the Island Pool and Briney’s which has fished well with the fly since water levels dropped.

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 24th to Sunday 30th April 2006.

Lough Melvin was fairly quiet for the week

GWEEBARRA RIVER – Monday 24th to Sunday 30th April 2006.

The Gweebarra ran low for the greater part of the week except for a flood on Tuesday but the very windy conditions made angling very difficult. We have no reports of any catches to date.

ESKE FISHERY – Monday 24th to Sunday 30th April 2006.

Levels in the Lough and River were low for the week except for a small rise on Tuesday and Wednesday, which gave fair conditions in the river. Conditions on the Lough were difficult this week with most days being very bright with only light breezes to ‘push the boat along’. Only 2 visiting anglers fished the fishery for the week fishing on the Lough. I have no reported catch of salmon or sea trout this week so far just a number of brown trout caught from the Lough.

OWENEA RIVER – Monday 24th to Sunday 30th April 2006.

The river ran low for the week except for a small flood of 0.30 metres on Tuesday, which fell away fairly rapidly to read 0.21 by Wednesday. The gauge average for the week reads a low 0.19 metres. Only 4 visiting anglers were fishing for the week probably due in great part to the prevalent low water conditions.

Kevin Lyons, MELVIEW LODGE GUESTHOUSE, Drumlish Road, Clonrollagh, Co Longford Tel: 003534345061 Email:  info@melviewlodge.com Web: http://www.melviewlodge.com  covering fisheries in the LONGFORD AREA and the STROKESTOWN LAKES
General Fishing Report
Lakes in Strokestown and Roosky areas started off well but as the week went on and the weather became more unsettled catches dropped back. Some of the fish caught by visiting anglers from the UK were of specimen size – Bream to 7 lb 5 oz and Tench to 6 lb 3 oz.  At the time of writing this report down pours of cold rain and hail stones is hampering angling.  The River Shannon at Lanesboro and Boyle seem to have a good number of fish in them now, once the weather becomes settled again, this should see some of the lake’s improve.
Gary and Andy angling guests of Melview Lodge had great fishing on this their first trip to Ireland. They were put on select swims by Kevin and after putting in a lot of effort pre-baiting they were duly rewarded with good bags of Tench and on another pre-baited peg they had a great catch of Bream to 6 lbs. Gary and Andy said they had heard the fishing had changed in Ireland. Well, after some sound advice and good results they changed their opinion. They will be back next year if not before.
Mike Smithers from Oxfordshire a regular visitor to Ireland stayed at Melview Lodge in Longford. He had mixed week. The week started with pre-baiting a swim Kevin had in mind for him. The first few day’s saw plenty of Roach, Hybrids and Skimmers, then just before the Bream came into the swim it was plagued by Pike of which three were caught. However Mike did manage to bag a few great Bream before the end of his trip.
Paul Waghorn reports from Lanesboro
Fishing over the past week in the Lanesboro area has been a mixed affair. It was very slow up to Friday. On Saturday things changed with an abundance of Tench appearing downstream of the bridge on the Longford bank by the steps. Seamus Moorhouse Dublin had 8 Tench over 4 lbs, best 5 lbs 8 ozs. His fishing partner Niall Herbert had 2 good Tench, best 5 lbs 8 ozs. A Scottish party fished on the hot water stretch and had a 5 lbs. 4 oz male Tench. By mid afternoon on Saturday hybrids moved into the hot water and anglers had good fishing all along the section, no bumper weights but steady fishing nonetheless. The best recorded bag of 82 lbs. was caught by Mr Burgun from Middleborough fishing in a party of four. Three anglers from Stoke fished the main Channel over the weekend Saturday and Sunday and reported mixed bags up to 60 lbs. in five to six hour sessions. No reports from the Cut. On Tuesday May 2nd fishing seems to have switched off again but there was surface activity evident. Lets hope the present unsettled spell of weather doesn’t spoil the fishing over the coming days. Paul Waghorn fished the River Suck downstream of Castlecoote and reported a good day with bags of roach to 8 ozs. The lower Inny is also producing in the evenings.
Now that peak season is with us, anglers are advised to pre-book maggots well in advance, particularly during peak times and if possible to give two weeks notice. Contact Peter at Irish Bait Angling Services Tel from UK 00353 49 9526258.

The whole system has come alive over the past number of days. Unfortunately the weather has gone hill with heavy rain and wind which may hamper fishing. There was excellent fishing reported almost everywhere. Good Hybrids, Roach and Tench are showing at Bullock Island. An angling party of 6 anglers from England headed by Mr Sutcliffe fished Meelick and had on average 40 lbs. to 50 lbs. bags of large roach and hybrids. Ray Duthie and Joe Murray fished Mickies pond on Monday. Over the first two hours they had no fish, the following three hours produced 15 kg. of hybrids, roach and 4 large Bream.
The Banagher International Festival is scheduled to commence next Sunday May 7th, we look forward to that. Entries are now closed, no available places left. However, bookings for the September match are still being taken, contact Ray if interested.
