Once again July has proved to be a hard month for anglers when it comes to taking fish in numbers on a regular basis. The prolonged period of abnormally high temperatures could only result in one outcome, especially considering the fact that surface temperatures peaked at 23degrees C, this being that fish would be forced into the deeper stretches of the Reservoir.

This was fine for those anglers fishing Ledgered Worm who know the water as they were able to benefit from their knowledge, and in point of fact the majority of good bags taken throughout July were recorded by anglers who visit us on a regular basis. However for those anglers fishing Fly from either bank or boat along with the majority of day permit anglers using Ledgered Worm this lack of knowledge was evident in the number of fish they recorded with their returns.

Happily we can report that August has began well, the expected seasonal weather for this time of year has already caused a three degree Celsius drop in the surface water temperature, bringing it back into line with what we would normally experience for this time of year. Results due to this temperature drop have already started to improve across all methods fished at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir. Fly anglers fishing from both bank and boat are once again producing good results for six fish limits.

D Jones of the Bristol area produced the best six fish limit for an angler fishing Fly from the bank over the past seven days, his total bag weight for six fish was 12lbs 8ozs and included a best fish of only 2lbs 8ozs. Ron Lewis of Carmarthen recorded the best bag for an angler fishing Fly from the boat, his six fish which included a best fish of 3lbs, totalled 14lbs 1oz. Well done Ron.

S Lee from Hampshire took the best bag for an angler fishing Ledgered Worm during the past week, his six fish limit which included a best fish of 4lbs totalled 17lbs exactly. The best fish taken by one of our junior anglers over the same period was a 4lb Rainbow Trout. This was landed by young Mr Anthony Rees of Ammanford whilst fishing Ledgered Worm on an adult and child permit. Five fish were recorded on this permit with Anthony taking four of them. Well done Anthony.

This week’s free permit from all day permits returned during the past seven days goes to Mr Phillip Evans (or as he is better known “Gabby”) of Carmarthen.
