  1. sounds a bit odd! as if the playing field needs levelling in some way? Surely this sort of grey area just muddies the waters.
  2. Thinking WAG got their own way on the mls and its gone to their heads, Notice they are talking about bag limits on spear fishing as well, was not even aware that there is any significant number of spear fishermen in the uk!
  3. At the risk of sounding facetious what happens to any fish over the 5/15tonne limit if caught while fishing for other species? As we all know that fish dont usually read white papers as they get all soggy when submerged!
  4. [quote Back to the mullet , seining mullet from Sennen has been taking place for a very long time but they still continue to return in amounts worth catching. We have seen a huge increase in the number and size of mullet shoals in the past 3-5 years . As the minimum size for grey mullet is just 20cms maybe a raise in that would be helpful. Are the shoals greatly increased everywhere or just down here? Re size limits, what size does a grey Mullet start to spawn?
  5. Agreed but exclusive will never be a word applied to our fisheries, as someone mentioned in an earlier post, control was given to the EU, we will have to find another remedy although the NZ model may well be worth examining for ideas.
  6. Although not a popular food scource in this country i was wondering why a market is not being aimed at for spider crabs instead of leaving them to rot in the pots at the side of the quays? Seems a hell of a waste and another scource of ammunition for those who want to restrict and control all of the various aspects of sea fishing. I live by the sea and dont know why they are left to waste, can you imagine the snap ideas generated by the tourists who see the same.
  7. i'm sure the first thing i'm going to think about is what restaurant i can dump me spoils off to, not. Fully agree, would hate to see really prime fresh Bass, maybe having taken all day to get a hold of ruined by some over the top chef like that stein fella! Seriously tho i see no harm at all with the tagging idea, anything to get rid of the 'blackfish' sales. Trouble is, as with everything else when the controls are fully in place and working to a reasonable degree, how far are they going to be spread, mis-applied and abused by people with, usually, their own political agenda and very little understanding of what goes on?
  8. I'm not after a slanging match just resonable debate and giving the other side of the 'yarn'. Will make a pleasant change! Since actually looking around and finding out a few things i for one am learning a bit of 'the other guys' point of view, all helps to balance opinion.
  9. I can relate to that, we had some rollmop from asda and were sick as dogs, the 'fresh fish' normally doesnt look too well either
  10. Am just thinking that the wages although pre tax was even after a fairly short trip without a full hold they were saying when they had to return early for repairs etc, see your point though in that sort of trade a bad day pays nothing does it! Easy to read £900 for ten days as more than it is though isn't it?
  11. are sea potatoes edible?
  12. And to go on and say he is going to use his daughters blue one next time the mind boggles strange innit
  13. No squidding?!!??! Dont think i know a chippy competent enough to cook the stuff without it turning to rubber. If things are that bad i better tell my Dad to put a guard on his Koi Carp!
  14. Look forward to it, first one was a bit of an eye opener for those with no idea (like myself)
  15. Thanks Barry and Wurzel. As things were we assumed that he was fishing as he was steaming back and forth, then we packed in as others more 'experienced' advised us that there would be nothing more caught anytime soon, will be not following the herd like dolly the bloody sheep in future then thanks to the answers. Later in the day she was made up tho as she got a small Pollack from another mark (she was the only one to catch!!) so all was not lost. As far as some other posts are concerned i cannot see the need to acuse a man of greed for persuing his profession, any more than a Farmer is greedy for wanting to produce more beef or you are greedy for wanting your anual pay rise for that matter. This sort of thing is just fueling the fires. As far as i can see both groups will eventually have to make some sort of compromise no matter how much kicking and screaming goes on. By the way i didn't think the £900 per man for the 10 days at sea was bad as someone mentioned the series trawlermen, for 50 times the risk its hardly 50 times the national average wage is it? Wish we'd been on the same sort of wage/risk ratio when i was in the army though! In my own humble opinion, i dont give a monkeys toss for all this handbags at 50 paces lark, we need both groups and the seperate infrastructures which depend on them, we also need a certain amount of sensible conservation or there will eventually be bugger all for us to catch and i for one will not be too impressed if i have to take my kids round showing them where there used to be fish caught, also i would rather not have to go to the chippy for a cat and chips (although this is probably the most use a cat would have been since the invention of the mousetrap) and talk about the fishing fleet we used to have, thinking it's a bit too much like that already!
  16. Not allowed! dont pay this much council tax to put up with snow!

  18. Been a bit in our local rag this week which i unfortunately left in the canteen at work, basically saying that Monkfish being caught and sold in Brixham are perfectly sustainable and not threatened however there is another seperate species of fish (which doesnt live in uk waters) also called monkfish which is threatened. Unfortunately i didnt clock whether they were being caught in a beam trawl or not. But like has been said before in here, good free publicity for Asda hey!?!
  19. Wondering if someone could give me some information. Now i don't pretend to know the ins and outs of commercial fishing and never have. But the last time i had the opportunity to wet a line i went with my nippers down to Berry Head, where after about two casts a trawler started working approximately 100yards out. Needless to say the guys who were fishing packed in as there was no longer any point. My daughter (5 Yrs old) just getting the bug for fishing was greatly dissapointed. So can anyone answer this question; If the fish stocks are well off and not over exploited why does a trawler need to work that close in? Perhaps you could take this one Wurzel as i would like the perspective from your side of the fence. Thanks
  20. ..... I deliberately use routes which are available at all states of tide, and are easily done at speed, that way I don't have to think to navigate, I can simply follow my routes without having to worry about the tide or anything. Very sensible! Readi8ng this reminded me of that muppet trying to navigate round the coast using an AA road atlas a couple of years back.
