  1. Hi guys, ive been using these occasionally, but with nervous aprehension, as i lost a fly a couple of weeks ago as the fish had one last flick near the bank, all i had left was the clip left on the line, does this happen often? or was it pretty much a freak occurance? cheers spug
  2. My regular / most reliable catchers are red and white cats whisker hares ear (silver ribbed) corixa olive dun rubber legged daddy (Sinking) and an orange dog nobbler if times are hard cheers spug
  3. Hi all I know there is plenty of gear you can buy to help a fly float or sink ect, what im after is something to get an (unweighted) soldier palmer to sink quick and stay sunk as i retrieve (slow), either that or should i customise it with a bead, where i fish i always catch on either red/orange cats whisker or a hares ear, i thought i could try this as i just seem to get a feeling that it will work, strange i know but ive got to try it! tight lines spug
  4. brilliant site elton and easy to post onto too, i hope it goes well. tight lines spug
  5. Now those last few posts certainly sounded like gold dust to me, thanks alot guys... next silly question Whats the differance between a buzzer and a nymph or are they just different names for the same thing? cheers again spug
  6. ive noticed several thing since ive started fly fishing, all the blokes catching the monster sized fish on our fishery use tiny black flies of varying types, and some of them dont seem to cast alot better than myself, i tend to consistantly catch 2lb'ers on a red cats whisker and nothing on the black things, so im assuming alot of my problem is not setting the depth right on the leader length? cheers spug
  7. Ive just got myself a lureflash viper rod 6-7 weight 9'6" i got it at a good price on e-bay, it is a great rod for the price, much nicer to use than any of the renter rods ive used that cost more to buy! i know chuby doesnt like lureflash reels but i also just picked up a full lureflash mercury reel and spool set second hand, fully loaded with some floating, sinking and intermediate lines for £15 im on a really tight budget so im really happy, and i find its balanced to the rod well, so my arm doesnt ache so much. i am only a beginner but i'll certainly back up the big guns in saying the line quality matters, i was using a cheepo the other day, 5 hours 2 bites, i should have changed sooner, as with my better quality line the presentation is soooo much better, first cast first fish, proper job! spug
  8. yes i am incidently ive just found someone who reproduces the fly ive got as a long shanked orange and white cats whisker! chuby you are the man! cheers spug
  9. Thanks chuby just looked at a previous thread, "where to buy flies" and looked on the selectafly website, clicked on the mini cats whisker heading and there she was in all her glory, i shall certainly have to get some of them, thanks again spug

  12. Hi all just want to pick your brains again, im sorry for being stupid but ive taken a picture of a fly i borrowed and used yesterday, i caught 5 trout with it (on my second time out, not catching any the first time) hence i need to get me one of these little beuties, its obviously very old as the white tail and wing(?) are rust stained from the hook. i want to start a fishing log so this would be usefull. cheers spug
  13. Hi im new to the forum, and think a real user reveiw section would be brilliant, im fed up with the manufactured reveiws, i think that the winner of the review com could be chosen by the deitors though to save any trouble, otherwise it may make things complicated,. Aswell as gear perhaps we could rate sellers too, as there are internet shops we all know and love (or not), and also the sellers on ebay, that can vary alot. cheers spug103
  14. Hi again just out of interest, in your opinion, what are the differences between fishing with a split cane rod and a carbon fibre rod, and what are they best suited for? cheers spug

    Where to start

Although i didnt catch anything this time i bought a fish from the fishery shop (yes i know its cheating)and prepared it for the missus and i to eat later, she cooked it up pan seared with home grown boiled potatoes, asparagus, baby sweetcorn and french beans, absolubtly beautiful. I have seen in most of the shops and fisheries they have trout cookery books, you could try one of these, there are millions of ways to cook any fish it may just be a case of finding the one you prefer. cheers spug

    Where to start

Glad the lessons are going well RPM just had my first on saturday, followed by a days fishing, the instructor said i was doing really well, and its just practice from now on as i can already cast well, but i will have another lesson to sort out the presentation and to learn some water craft, (yes ive been reading lots of books), i had a few bites but didn't get one landed, next time. cheers Spug
  17. Thanks Singy so what does it mean to have a stiff action? is it related to the rod weight no. ? unfortunatly ive been looking for second hand gear for over a month with no joy but i shall still keep an eye out for some, all the local shops just keep trying to sell me expensive gear i cant afford, and to be honest id rather have a rubbish rod than none at all. what item of kit would be the best to concentrate the money on at first, a better line or a better rod?
  18. Hi all Im a newbe going for my first proper lesson on saturday, i want to get a budget set up to get me started, but i only really have a budget well under £100 (dont laugh too hard) I have heard many different things about what to look for, one person said a #5-6 rod, another a #6-7 and another a #7-8, all are agreed at a 9' 6" - 10' rod, with a weight forward floating line, one person was saying about a stiff acting rod being better is this to do with the line rating? i will be learning at the tavistock trout fishery to start with with a view to fishing a few local rivers and resevoirs aswell occasionally. what sort of thing should i look for in the outfit i get, i just need something super cheap to get me started, i can save up to up grade it in bits later. cheers spug
