Maybe Paypal have sorted it out recently? I got this email from them this morning: Because it has expired, your credit card ending in 4164 has been removed from your PayPal account. I have never caught a large Perch, and by large I mean over 3 inches! I am very keen to catch one so I am really absorbing as much info as I can on this post. I am confused about what is the best way to put a work on the hook. On one of John Wilsons video's I watched he threaded the point of the works head into the hook and pushed it up the shank before bringing the point out of the side of its body. Is this the best method or should a worm be folded in half on the hook to make an easier gulp for the fish?

Apart from the obvious (one is at the front and the other at the rear) what is the difference between a rear drag reel and a front drag reel and why would you use one over the other? Is it just a personal preference or is one used for a particular method, application or style? Thanks.

I have no problem talking to others and passing friendly advice between each other is a great way to learn, the person who you talk to could very well be a 'Veteran' of that water and know all its secrets. My niggle is the way that some anglers approach your swim, either with a complete lack of idea or just no respect. I have had some great advice from other anglers on a local water which has paid of some great results. But just as badboybubbie says above, its also great fun to lift several fish out of the water in front of the chavs who dont have any respect or idea. I usually end up picking up the rubbish from a peg before I fish there, I just dont want the places I go to get closed down because of all the crap left behind by others, especially open cans of bloody sweetcorn!

I know where you mean, its actually called The Canal isnt it? If this is the one you mean then I fish there on a fairly regular basis I'm the gnome down at the far end, opposite the polish anglers who fish of the peninsula...and leave their McDonalds wrappers everywhere! I like Northey Park as its not quite as heavily stocked as other places like Decoy Lakes in Whittlesey so it presents a bit more of a challenge, or maybe i'm just not that good! Thanks Peter.

I would echo most comments. I think the ability to 'read the signs' of a new water and make a good judge of where the fish are is a very valuable skill and, viewed by a beginner, could be seen as an art in itself. Applying a technique or method which is adaptable to the weather, clariity of the water, available swims, which species your targeting, the people around you (Gozzer knows something about this!) and successfully catch is an art. Lure, fly, float, stalking, stret pegging, bivvying down, lifting, ledgering, method, swimfeeding, freelining or just swearing heavily at them can all, which lots of practise be art forms.

Apologies to Gozzer and Anderoo, I did a search for similar topics but must have missed them, otherwise I would have just added my two pence instead of creating a new moan! To quote Rusty from Gozzer's topic on Angling Etiquette... "If I'm walking a lake and see an angler in full camo gear lying on his stomach some five yards back from the waters edge then I'll figure that he's stalking and probably won't be in the mood for a chat." As I was kind of stalking or at least trying to stay out of sight in a difficult area I think I may put up a sign behind me to advise others of what I am doing and what they should do. Any suggestions what I should put on this sign?

This may be a dumb question but I know that canals are exempt from the close season, others here are saying they fish canals but I dont know if I have any near me that I can use. Does Peterborough have a canal? I have looked up on UK Canal Maps and it lists the River Nene but I would like to know if some parts can be fished in the close season. If not the Nene is there somewhere else close by I can go to? Thanks.

This is kind of following on from other topics such as fishing and dog owners. I recently went to a free water in Peterborough and, as I am used to commercials where there is not much disturbance from other people I wasnt used to what I had to deal with. This place is open to the general public as it is just a public area with 5 fishable ponds. The conditions were tough anyway because of the weather but I know there are some good size tench and possibly some carp in there as well. It beats sitting at home anyway! I had spotted what looked like possibly a ghost carp and a mirror carp moving from area to area really slowly. The water was very clear and not very deep at only 3 feet. These guys were drifting around with their fins out of the water. There was no one else about, even at 2pm when I was following these carp around and looking for a good spot to cast to without spooking them and then wait for them to find my bait. I knew they weren’t feeding as it was too hot but I hoped that a bait in their face would change their minds. I found a good spot where I have to lay flat against the bank to make sure I was not skylined and hidden. I knew they would return to this spot in front of me so I cast out a fishmeal pellet which I had caught two tench on in the morning and waited. The carp were about 20 feet away to my left but slowly drifting towards my bait. It seemed like they were moving at 1 inch per month! They were slowly getting closer and now I’m sure they can smell it…closer still, only three feet away…a bit more…come on!! A sudden noise behind me…”ANY LUCK MATE?” This t**ser with a barrow full of fishing gear stood behind me completely skylined then said “Oh look…there’s a ghost carp over there!” he shouted. “Yes there was, wasn’t there” I said as the pair of carp swam quickly away from us. I moved down the bank a bit to try the same tactic, the other angler had gone way over to my right and was starting to setup so I thought I must be safe. This new spot was even better now, I was sitting flat against the steep bank to stay hidden and I could see 3 or 4 tench and carp all within 2 feet of my bait and getting closer. Closer still…one of them looks interested…he’s moving towards it… “HAVE YOU CAUGHT ANYTHING?” Says another skylined, loud tw*t behind me. “Oh look there’s some quite big ones there!” Pointing his chubby finger towards my swim. “Yes there was!” I said in a less than pleasant voice. “Would you mind bending down please? No, don’t bother, it’s too late now” I said as the whole collection of ‘Big ones’ swam away. Skylined loud tw*t left to join his ‘Any luck mate’ t**ser down the bank. This happened twice more. At least the other two times weren’t from anglers. What annoys me is that this behaviour is from anglers and not from the general public, they should really know better shouldn’t they? When I was young I was taught to keep quite, never fish in another anglers swim, never jump around on the bank, dont disturb other anglers and dont skyline yourself. The general public I can forgive because they dont really know any better but are these simple matters of etiquette not taught or observed anymore? I am not a grumpy old bugger but when you've spent an hour sitting on your numb backside getting more and more excited as the fish get closer and closer...then some idiot goes and ruins your whole afternoons work, then I think I may have a reason to be pee'd off! Cant we run a "Good Manners" campaign?

I saw something similar to this on the news, I think its a trial to see if its worth rolling it out nationally. I wish it every success. Its not just about fishing but the environment and conservation as well which is more important.

I like to use a light setup for my float fishing but I am having trouble with my line sinking. I know that I can run the line through a washing up liquid soaked cloth or soak the spool in washing up liguid overnight but I am quite a forgetful person...and also lazy! Can someone recommend a good line, from 2lb up to 6lb for me to buy? I just want the damn thing to sink all the time without me having to do anything about it. Is there a particular make, manufacturer or design? Thanks.

I agree. You would think that a big place like Peterborough would have a good few tackle shops and there were a couple of years ago. If you look in the yellow pages it will show you about 4-5. I now have only one local shop to go to, Sheltons of Peterborough. I went to see an even closer one to me and found it had closed down. If you buy from your local shop they will stay local, if not...get used to buying your tackle from Aldi Beside's, when I visit the shop I usually remember something that I needed to buy. If you do that from an online store you've got make another order and pay more shipping charges. I'm not saying everything should come from the local as online shops and ebay can have some very attractive offers that you wouldnt find in the store but as rarepleasures has said...if you want a local tackle shop then help them to stay there.

It doesnt seem to be that much of a secret when it has its own website! Redmire Pool Website You can book to fish there, although during the summer months prices start at £100 per person for the weekend. If your after a bit of history then that doesnt seem too bad really. The website does not say where it is though, but a bit of digging around points to a certain 3 word village in Herefordshire.

I just thought I would share a useful tool I have found for discovering unlisted or unknown fishing lakes and ponds. Because my job is in IT I mostly use the internet for finding local fishing waters, but I do occasionally talk to people as well! I use Google Maps and Google Earth, both of which are completely free to use. Google Earth is an application that you can download and install but you need a reasonably good computer to run it. If your running Windows XP then its probably good enough. You can also use Google Earth to record all the places your looking for or have been to previously. I use it to keep a record of where I have been, what I caught, bait I used, etc. You can get Google Earth here: Google Earth Google Maps is just a regular webpage which you can find here - http://maps.google.co.uk This allows you to use it as a map to find your way around but if you click on Satellite on the right it will give you a birds eye view of the area. I spent a couple of hours looking around my local area and found several ponds and lakes that I can find no other information for on the internet. One of these was a small collection of ponds not far from my house which I have now found to be free to fish! There's tench, carp, roach, bream and rudd in them, all you need is a license. Another is a reservoir but I have yet to find more info on this. There are more and they look to be on farm land, I'll take a drive out that way and ask around. I have also used it to find a lake that I used to fish on when I was a boy in Dagenham. I found it quite easily by remembering the path I used to walk. Its still there today. I had not used these applications I would have had no idea these places existed. Sometimes they can also help you to see features in the water that you cant spot from the bank. It takes a while to get used to what a lake or pond looks like from above because it can just look like a ploughed field or, in the case of a river, a dirt road. As an example I found a place that another topic had been talking about by following the directions in the post and looking in the satellite images in Google Maps. The pond was easy enough to spot from above...it looks quite nice as well! Here it is I apologise if I am teaching many of you to suck eggs as a lot of you may already use this to help you, but there may be some who had no idea of its uses. My father has been going to the same place now for almost a year in Clacton-on-Sea and he is getting bored. He's not too great on this internetwork thingy so doesnt find it to easy to find other places to go. He has asked in the local tackle shop but only seems to be pointed towards syndicates or members only. I think he has already applied to one of these for when the season starts again but until then he would like to try new places. He has been going to a commercial water in Weeley so far and doesnt know of any others. Does anyone here live in the area or know of good waters around that he can try? Cheers.

This is nice and inexpensive if you just want a quick pop up to get out of this bloody April rain. Ebay: Pop up shelter The only problem is its slightly the wrong colour green! They do have it brown though. This has got me thinking about getting a lightweight shelter so I found this one as well.
