  1. Kingfishers don't migrate, they live here all the time and yes they will definitely have favourite perching spots, often on dead branches over shallow water.
  2. Info on the site that the above link is for says that you should reproof goretex regularly but only to stop the outer layer from getting waterlogged and making it heavier. The garment should be waterproof in its own right by virtue of a ptfe layer in the middle of the material. I suppose that there must come a time when that layer breaks down through wear, but how long should we expect it to last before that happens?

  4. My wife likes to feed the blue tits using a bird feeder,a local sparrow hawk also appreciates this gesture and frequently takes them off the feeder in a flurry of feathers. She also has one in a ball shape that the birds go inside and are safe, except that the sparrowhawk sits on tip of the post that the feeder is attached to and waits for them to come out. BTW are you sure this was a kestrel,I would have thought them a bit small to take a pigeon?

  6. I thought goretex was not supposed to leak. I've been thinking about getting some from Transworld, are you telling me they're no good ? There is lots of info on goretex here... http://www.gore-tex.co.uk/advisor/full_pro...roduct_line.cfm [ 19 March 2002, 04:30 PM: Message edited by: ajp ]

    Rods

I'd have to suggest a twin top Avon type rod. The John Wilson is highly regarded although I've never tried one.

  10. Mally,I'll accept that you probably can't fish for these fish, but what sort of tackle suitable for 8" fish can open valves on an oil rig?

  14. Any seeds baits should be boiled for a few minutes to prevent germination, even if soaking is the only preparation necessary for actually fishing. I find an old pressure cooker is handy if you are not organised enough to have some ready at all times in the freezer.

  16. Is that anything like a tortoise party? Who's going to shell out for that?

  18. I got lumbered with two bulk spools of 8lb Synergy, one I bought for myself and one for a guy at work who disappeared from the scene. I found it to be awful, lost several carp in Hornwort where normally I'd just pull them out easy on Berkeley Big Game. These were not enormous fish, 5-10 lb taken on floaters on the edge of the weed, a swim I've fished often early in the season just to put a bend in the rod,and never lost one there before. It keeps the broad beans upright though. I can't get on with Pro-gold either.

    Laying On?

"Laying on" is exactly that, the bait is laid on the bottom, a float is attached to the line for bite indication, as much overdepth as necessary to stop it from being dragged under. There are many more finer points to the method which all go to making it a success. It's basically light legering using a float for bite indication. I would expect that a "search" on one or two of the angling websites would turn up more info. 22. I am with Andy T, I think the barbel are already there. I'll bet that 90% of todays barbel anglers have never caught one on float tackle, they don't know what they are missing. Danny H, English Nature have turned down stocking consents for rivers in the SW cos the barbel are not indigenous.
