  1. Walking round Asda today it occurred to me to ask the esteemed community here for their advice on the quickest way to search lage supermarkets for wife’s who have sent husbands on small errands having missing something on the list!! You must have seem me – wandering up and down looking left and right with a four pack of baked beans in one hand, a bag of sugar in the other and a bottle of cider under my arm. What I would like to know is what is the quickest way to search such stores? Should I stay in one place, walk up and down the middle, try every isle, try and hover or what???? Whatever is suggested must be able to deal with being given completely incorrect advice on which direction she is heading in! Cheers. Roger.
  2. I got checked for the first time ever yesterday! Trouble is I had just bust my rod (see other post here ) so when this voice behind me said “hello” in a chatty sort of way my response was a little grumpy. They then said err just checking licences and it must have been like a scene from the Keystone Cops!! I stood up and dashed around thinking Christ I’ve just cleared out me box what if ..... etc. Also I was fishing with two rods but one of my young daughters had been having a dabble with one .... Oh God .... luckily she was sorting a tangle for me at the time so it all looked pretty innocent. Initially I couldn’t find the licence but they spotted it for me. Then I almost knocked over the other rod .... panic etc. And I was innocent!! They said they had caught three that day but none where I was fishing. Seemed nice enough blokes but why shouldn’t they be?? Cheers. Roger.
  3. John, How deep?? There are many variations of the Zig Rig. Many use a semi fixed ledger, I prefer a running ledger setup. As far as depth limitations all I can say is that IMHO it can get very scientific. That is with the semi fixed rig you may end up with a very long and difficult to cast hook length, you end up casting out of buckets etc. With the running setup the obvious thought is that there is no limitation but in fact the bait has to be able to drag much more line up to the top as it will include line that is the rod side of the ledger. Thus contrary to first impressions it may not be as good in deep water as the semi fix rig. I have to admit though that all this is conjecture on my part and there are many on here that can advise positively on this. I have only used the running rig in depths of 6 to 8 feet max and it has been ok, with the exception that I suspect the bait length tangles with the main line occasionally on casting and the bait (bread normally for me) never appears at the surface. I still catch when that happens though!! With regard to missed bites I use a quiver tip and keep in contact with the bait, often pulling it under the surface a few inches, so as far as bite detection is concerned I don’t have a problem. I do have a problem with pull outs though and this definitely increases when I Zig. If you think about it there is a huge amount of enforced slack in the line and any strike is effectively again the weight of the ledger rather than direct contact with the fish. I can only think that this results in poorer first strike contact and poorer hook position in the mouth. I have reduced this problem by increasing the ledger weight to 1.5oz (I only fish light!!) and using the largest hook that the fishery allows - but size 8 max. In general I know that we should keep fishing as simple as possible but I have been using the Zig for about 2 years now and I reckon that for it to be really productive it requires a great deal of thought and application, but it is definitely worth it. I like Den’s idea as well. Den – if you see this just how deep would you need the water to be to use this. Or could it be used in any depth. Hope this helps. Roger.
  4. Thanks I feel much better now As matter of fact I did play the fish by hand for a bit (about 10 seconds!!) but it was far too powerful and went straight under the staging, snagged and snapped the hook length. The middle section had in fact broke in two places. Its on its way back to Maver so I’ll see what happens. To be honest I’m not making a big thing of it. If I get a free middle section then great but I’m not too hopeful. One of the breaks was so clean I didn’t realise it was a break at first but the other was clean for about 300 degrees and the other bit was more shattered so could have crush damage I suppose – don’t know when though!!
  5. A Zig Rig. You can use a quiver tip as bite detection as well. Much better IMHO. Cheers. Roger.
  6. Viaduct Fishery: Somerset 21st August, time about 11:00 ish. Zig Rig, bread 6” under the surface. Rod: Maver Retribution Multi tip (Deceased) Reel: Okuma Epic ER30 Good take, plodding fight under the rod tip. After about 5 minutes the fish made a run for the staging I was on, so max pressure to try and hold it out and bang, middle section cleanly broke in two places. Fish made it to staging, snagged up and got away. Caught sight of the fish and it was at least 15lb and could have been 20+. (Yeh, yeh I know!!) Main line was 8lb Maxima, hook length is 8lb Daiwa Super Shinobi. Clutch on the Epic was nicely set to allow line to be taken but not this time it seems. I have spoken to the shop where I bought the Maver and they reckon I may have a chance of a replacement if they (Maver I think he meant) are happy that the rod had not been damaged. Can’t help but wonder if was pushing the Maver too hard with 8lb line though – even though the clutch was set. Thinking though ... can’t remember checking the clutch this time. May well have been my fault Managed to continue with an old rod but …… Cheers. Roger.
  7. Fascinating!!! Now I wonder who would do that??? Thanks for the explanation. Roger.
  8. Newt I'm sure I have read that Port 4444 is in there somewhere as well - at Firewall level I think. What's that about then? If it means nothing post back and I will try and find the link. Cheers. Roger.
  9. The problem in small pipes is that it can be easier to go forwards than it is back!! Despite my fears I have had to crawl down a few – clean ones that is. Now there’s another thought – the pipe filling water while you are in there or collapsing behind you. Now I’m really motoring – what about getting stuck head first down a road gulley. I read in the paper that someone got drowned just like that a month or so ago – I think they had dropped their phone down it and gone after it on thier own! The trouble is they are deeper than you think and not wide enough to turn round in should you slip down!!! Gotta go – feel poorly!!!

    Tangles

Thanks for the replies, but can’t the hook length still fold back and twist round the main line? Does the Power Gum link help with that? Remember this rig is being used to fish lumps of bread on or near the surface. Cheers. Roger.

    Tangles

Ok, I’m going to try that rig the bloke was using on Angling Times TV with the ledger on a Power Gum link. Apparently the Power Gum link will stop tangling  He mentioned that the hook length needed to be about 6 to 12” longer that the link. Can anyone explain how this is going stop tangles   For those that didn’t see it he was fishing a sort of Zig Rig but instead of the ledger being semi fixed it was effectively a running ledger but the weight was fixed to the main line via this Power Gum link and a swivel bead to the main line. How is this not going to be prone to the hook length tangling round the main line on casting? Surely it will still be right next to it. I don’t understand    Cheers. Roger.
  12. Getting stuck and not being able to move. Even the thought of pot holing brings me out in a cold sweat!!!
  13. Judy, You may have had enough and want to let it rest now, but even though you have deleted the emails I’m sure they can still be traced if you want to pursue it. As Poledark said they may even still be in your deleted items folder if you are using Outlook or similar! Even then depending on how you access your mail and how the account is configured they may still in the mailbox at your ISP, even though you have deleted them locally. More stiill, even if they have gone for good your ISP should still have records that could help. As I said, maybe you just want to let it rest but I’m sure some of the folk on here could help you better than me if you wished. Whatever, glad your back and as a famous politician once said “Don’t let the buggers get you down! All the best. Roger.
  14. I think its also considered the ‘internet’ equivalent of shouting too! Cheers. Roger.
  15. Ok, thanks. Does it come it any sort of breaking strain and roughly how much is it? Thanks. Roger.
  16. Also have a look at Sygate I’m not an expert but reading the opinions of others that purport to be its supposed to be one of the better freebies. I’m pretty sure it blocked msblaster as the logs showed blocked incoming traffic on IP port 4444 which is where Symantec are saying firewalls should be blocked. They also have a good forum. See what you think. All the best. Roger.
  17. On Angling Times TV they showed a Carp rig with a sort of sort of running ledger on a ‘power gum link’ – at least I think that is what he said! Can anyone tell me what a “power gum link” is please? Cheers. Roger.
  18. Ok, many thanks for the advice. Cheers. Roger.
  19. Anyone got a view on the Mitchell Electronic ‘something or other’ fixed spool reel? Its got a built in bite alarm and costs about £50. Cheers. Roger.
  20. I have read that straightforward re-gassing should cost no more than £50. However if additional work is required then Type aircon into the search box at:- http://www.honestjohn.co.uk Good site that it is, I still preferred to ask the question here Cheers. Roger.
  21. Thanks both. Colin – I think you may have misunderstood. I meant the air temperature at the vent not the setting on the temperature control. Newt – many thanks. Fan is fine. Its just that I was wondering and had read somewhere that it should be between 5 to 7 degrees C (41 to 45 F) at the vent but it was complex discussion!!! Cheers. Roger.
  22. Anyone ever measured the temperature at the central vent of a car with aircon? I’m getting about 50 degrees F when its in the eighties outside. Is that ok? Car is a 4 year old Volvo V40. Just wondering if it needs re-gassing. Cheers. Roger.
  23. Funny that I have that problem with my scales too Roger.
  24. Newt, Thanks for the advice but life’s too short mate! The rest of my mail seems to be getting to its destination ok. Thanks anyway, your advice IS appreciated. Cheers. Roger. [ 25. July 2003, 10:30 PM: Message edited by: Rogerb ]
  25. Can somebody let one of the AnglersNet admins know that email is getting bounced with following please. ############################### This message was created automatically by mail delivery software (Exim). A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: info@anglersnet.co.uk It appears that the DNS operator for anglersnet.co.uk has installed an invalid MX record with an IP address instead of a domain name on the right hand side. ############################### And while they are at it the message I am trying to send is: Hi. Just noticed that the picture I submitted to Angling Pictures has appeared but clicking on the thumbnail produces a 404 – File not Found, instead of the picture. Cheers. Roger. (Rogerb)
