  1. Very interesting Newt, thanks, I am just getting into lure fishing and recently discovered that my father had a box of stuff sent over from Canada when my grandfather died, this contained a heap of these jelly squid type lures, worms, twin tails, frogs and suchlike, we laughed when we saw them thinking that no sane person would fish with them, but now I am thinking of trying some out.
  2. quote: Irrespective of my views on the Close Season I believe that if the BAA goes ahead with this match that they will go a long way in damaging the credibility of angling as a whole. Very well put Peter, I always suspected that Des had no intention of going through with 'his idea' but he wanted to create a stir (as usual) and succeeded, the objective has now been achieved and the actual 'match' is unecessary to that end. For or against, we need to work together, this proposed event will not improve matters.
  3. Owdo Awaar, sorry I can't help you I don't even know where it is but as I'm on the lookout for new local waters to fish could you point me in the right direction please.
  4. Happy Birthday AN, and many thanks to you Elton and all the mods, without whose tireless efforts I would have to spend many more tiresome hours with my other half! oops sorry dear, only joking, yes I'm just logging off....
  5. Thanks for the tips, Steve's idea of using a second spool just hadn't occurred to me, I think that's the way to go, I may also have a look for the shakespeare thingy Cranfield ... cheers!
  6. Does anyone here know of any device which will indicate how much line you are loading onto a spool? I can never quite get it right when I'm loading backing line. Most reels seem to have capacity for three times the line that I need.
  7. I'm sure you are getting a right royal rip-off there, I get mine cut at the local barbers every few weeks and it costs only £3.50, that's a No.2 all round and short on top, I wouldn't dream of paying £16 for a barnet...
  8. I placed an order with them by phone recently and their service was superb, just goes to show sometimes things go wrong, I would ring them and ask about your order, e-mails can and do go astray can't beat the old fashioned dog'n'bone sometimes. Best of luck.
  9. Damn cheek! Mr.Fawcett, although I'm a little way out of Warrington myself, there is a variety of fishing hereabouts from canals like the leeds-liverpool, bridgewater, and sankey as mentioned, to commercials like Blundells at Rixton and Partridge at Culcheth, and I'm sure Mr.Lythgoe from Warrington AA could suggest a few local day ticket waters from the Warrington card. Hope you enjoy your stay up here Harrold
  10. Chris it does look as if a storm may be brewing, but I still have my doubts whether Des's intention is to carry out the threat, it ain't illegal until he's actually done it, in the mean time debate will be ongoing, and I think that is his prime objective.
  11. Thanks again Peter, I'll get on it tomorrow
  12. Tried it Yoxer thanks, but strangely thenumberone.co.uk - masterlines website, doesn't recognise wildeye softbaits, I suppose they are fairly new and the website seems well past its sell by date. Can't find the wildeyes on either of the two sites suggested by Peter either, though there are other types of softbaits on offer. I am now looking at U.S. sites like boatersworld.com
  13. Thanks very much Peter, I'll be checking those out pretty soon and let you know how I get on with them.
  14. Having been to the NEC I saw as many others will have seen Bob James and his Storm lures wildeye soft baits. Being a sucker for these things I would love to try them out but have not been able to find a supplier, my local Rapala/Masterline dealer doesn't do them, do any of you guys know?
  15. Des Taylors point I believe is to highlight the farcical situation that you have mentioned Tinca. Of course the match, if it does take place will target trout / salmonids, but 'nuisance fish' such as barbel, chub etc... are likely to be caught. The intention is to handle them carefully and return as quickly as possible after recording details, the 'winner' will be the angler who has caught the most 'nuisance fish' apparently! I think this is another one of Des's high publicity stunts designed to stir everyone up and restart debates again.
  16. My friends and I reckon that anglers tend to be pretty good innovators, and always appreciative of a neat solution to a problem they may not even have, this explains the 'I gotta have one of those' syndrome. Also we are constantly striving for 'the edge' whatever that might be, and are therefore unconsciously always looking for 'something'... just try going into your tackle shop with the intention of not looking around, not possible is it. Of course manufacturers are acutely aware of our shortcomings and exploit it to the full, it wouldn't surprise me if every tackle firm was headed by a woman, of course she would need to be surrounded by men to provide the new ideas.
  17. I can hear all the peacemakers and moderates saying live and let live now, but here goes I have to get it off my chest... Today I set off to a local commercial (my first visit actually) which has 5 lakes, one is for members only and costs several hundred pounds a year which is out of my league. Of the remaining four three were booked for matches taking place later in the day and the fourth was wall to wall pole anglers (not my scene at all) no peg to be had, and a notice up saying a match was taking place there too. I came away thinking ... well perhaps I should have rung up first even though it was before 8 a.m. Next port of call, a day ticket fishery known to be good for silver fish but again my first visit. A quick scout around, check for notices regarding matches... none... good, pick some pegs and settle down in a quiet corner to tackle up. We had set up, tackled, plumbed the depth and were just about ready to go when a guy comes along... you guessed it.. can't fish here you got to move there's a match!...  When I enquired where we could fish he directed me to a smaller water which was... wall to wall polers no three pegs where we could fish together. I left and probably will not return, the polers can have it. I ended up sometime before lunch on a local club water which is fishing poorly and never had a bite all day!.... roll on the 16th when we can leave the polers far behind and choose our swims. Why can't these match organisers get their acts together and stick up a notice so that those of us who fish purely for pleasure don't waste half of our weekend prime time chasing around trying to avoid their mobile pole-alleys! I don't suppose I should expect any more from greedy commercial owners who get good write ups in AT but make little or no provision for working pleasure anglers to enjoy their wonderful fishing facilities. There... chew on that all you matchmen I hope your elastics perish!
  18. Just to recap a little here; Whilst attempting to catch a 15 lb bream, Harold reckons he had 30 yards of 'average quality' 'slack line' and still failed to hook a 'fish' on the 'nose' Sorry but I still don't understand the question! By the way isn't it illegal to use fish roe as bait? or is that only back here in the motherland.
  19. If its similar to those which have been taking place around my area (greater manchester) its simply a questionnaire which asks such questions as; where are you going to? where are you coming from? how many peeps in the car? it is simply to gauge road usage at certain times of the day and I suppose could be useful in determining present and future traffic flow / problems. ...........or in your case Elton, maybe its the IR or customs and excise looking for you ?
  20. Ah!!!!!!!! proper snotties
  21. Can't fault Chapmans for speedy delivery
  22. Thanks Peter, I'm off to the Go Fishing show tomorrow so I'll see what I can pick up.
  23. Peter I'm new to piking and enjoying it tremendously, I'm looking for a good instructional video concentrating on lure techniques, if you have any suggestions I would be grateful... I may even bid for one of yours!!
  24. There's nowt much wrong with a 19 pence Asda loaf freshly whizzed up in the wife's liquidiser (minus the crusts for white crumb) Then you can add food colouring and flavourings whatever you like or mix it with particles (hemp, casters) or even add it to your shop bought powdered 'crumb'.
