  1. Hi Elton, It is possible that the individual in the experience that I spoke of had his set up incorrectly, and it did go off... Eventually. I ammended my post because I thought it possible that the fish he caught inhaled the bait and the indicator did not alarm until it started to move away. It was a double figure fish and I highly doubt it survived. From that experience I went from using two rods in tandem- one to cast a lure and the other to watch. I know only use one at a time. Neither is in the water at the same time. I think it translates to complacency when, with it working order, you look at your watch, sleep, or otherwise abuse it so you can do other things. Once I am able to get back out I may very well buy one. Do you endorse a specific model? (added) Nevermind- I just reread the thread. Fox it was. Steve- I didn't mean to highjack your thread!
  2. Makes sense now. In fact I think I've seem Matt Hayes using the rear indicator.
  3. When I was stationed on the Mississippi Gulf Coast I used a small bell attached to the rod tip. It was still noisy and I shied away from them even then Steve. With all the competition for food in that environment you never had to worry about a shy bite, you either had one or didn't and you definitely knew when you did. Having not used a bite indicator Tigger, do you find less deep-hooks than you otherwise might? I assumed they came as one piece not two. A few years ago I had an experience that convinced me I was better off not using one. There was a guy using a bite alarm. I thought he was completely enept, and unprepared. He really shouldn't have been after pike in my view which is why I mentioned complacency. In this instance he was doing everything other than paying attention to his rods. Mind you, a fish can without moving, inhale a bait leaving no indication whatsoever until it moves off. Can happen to anyone.
  4. Hi Steve, I never went out to purchase a bite indicator (buzzer?)- listening to them on the bank I find them about as annoying as mobiles. I have always used the drop back or tight line methods. I feel more confident knowing that I can see a bite take place if not using a float. I also use braid which I think enhances the indication. My own view is that relying on a buzzer causes complacency and more problems than its worth. (added) I started to write a longer post but thought one line might be enough to sum up.
  5. http://www.conservation-issues.co.uk/Artic...ion%2001-07.htm Introducing lead into the environment probably isn't a good thing. There are definite alternatives that are just as effective and less costly.
  6. I would really like to get up there sometime. They have a tagging program that I wouldn't mind participating in. Not to mention the size. Lucky you Sipadan
  7. Be aware of the affect it has on swans and other waterfowl/wildlife. http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/birds/p...on/symptoms.htm I think I remember this subject coming up and only the size of the lead was a factor. Still... In the USA it is no longer used in shotguns because it was found to be easily injested.
  8. I can use a towel and a mug Elton and the only reason you wouldn't be seeing them on the bank is my twin boys aren't old enough to get out yet! The page doesn't come up for me when I click add to cart for the towel- didn't try the mug.
  9. I see it! I understand the point you are trying to make Dan! I'll even raise you ten! But I think our definition of assessments are totally different. Maybe to the point we'll have to agree to disagree. My definition of assessment might go something like this: I knew it was going to rain on Wednesday, and knowing I was going to need something more substantial I still wore a sweatshirt. I fully understand that by not having a rain jacket there is the potential that I might get wet. Now at 10am I get a call and need to go out- say 100 meters away. It isn't raining at the moment but half way to where I need to be it starts to pour! What do I do? I have to make a decision. I don't have a jacket but in my car 50 feet away I have an umbrella. Now I have a dilemma! So in this case I choose to ignore the fact that I am getting wet and continue on... (Stupid analogy and sorry! ) I accepted the risk that I had the potential to get wet. I made a conscious decision and got wet. Now potentially/hypothetically/whatever (based on half story yada yada), Mr. Waugh had less time than I did to make his decision and being (hopefully) fully knowledgeable about what he has the potential to need. He gets to the cliff assesses that he can based on conditions- maybe hold onto the girl long enough for someone else to get back to get the right kit. It worked. You said- 'before he could fully assess'. <--- That my friend, is our difference. But he did make the decision based on what he had when he became aware of what he DID need. In the US in life saving techniques cardio pulmonary/ first aid they teach to assess the situation. (gauge the risk) Are you putting yourself in danger by providing assistance? Did the person get struck by lightning and is now not breathing etc, or did they touch a downed electrical line and it is still live? Struck by lightning I would assist. Downed power I think not. So, in my book whether he had all the facts or not is, in fact, irrelevant. No offense Dan! Ken, that split second decision may very well have made the difference. I hope Mr. Waugh is around if I am ever in need.
  10. I see your point Dan- I assumed it was a professional job myself. But as for the second bit- I disagree-He had to have made an assessment based on his actions. He didn't just stand there book in hand and wait for the girl to fall. Doesn't an assessment = a decision? Obviously it was the correct one and damn the risk. Agree and Agree!
  11. I purposefully avoided this thread. The arguments are all the same. My grandfather taught me how to fish in Northern Wisconsin and spent many hours showing me tactics, weather, where to look for bait. Everything to include leaving no trace behind. Livebaiting for me has always been an accepted practice. I moved to the UK in 2002 and learned how to fish over here. Talk about culture shock! I found Anglersnet quite by accident and read everything I could about pike, I finally caught one (using deads- Thank you Peter Waller). I argued-not debated- with a senior member of my piscatorial about throwing pike on the bank, knowing the benefits of having large pike around (Thank you Leon), then read how to care for pike (Thanks again Leon). I’ve read the arguments for pain, the pros and cons of using barbless over barbed, seen the benefits of using a priest (Catholic or no), and I’ve been to the anti sites. My point is, educate yourself! Make up your own mind! I still go fishing, and with more care than I would have otherwise. I carry an unhooking mat, forceps, and needlenose pliers and sadly I still end up with a few fish that are deephooked I no longer purposefully use live fish for bait, I always crush the barbs on all of my barbed hooks, I replace the trebles on store bought lures, and I can’t get within 20 feet of an open tin of red maggots. Disgusting! Ultimately, in moving to the UK I feel that I have a new found responsibility to return the fish that I catch in the same condition that they were caught and will continue the practice when I return.
  12. You are correct Snakey I didn't mean to leave out the LELs. Standards haven't changed. If anything they have improved. The alarms are smaller and most do multiple gases to include LELs. They also alarm for length of exposure- say for X hours at X ppm. FWIW in this poll, the 'mate' shouldn't have been left alone in the first place which is why you have that person at the top and your harness always attached to the tripod. This poll, I think, was meant to see how many people would disregard the rules and not knowing what those rules are, most people (I suspect) would have rushed in without thinking about it. Personally, I would have broken the 'rules' regardless based on the risk as assessed at the time and understanding those 'rules'. Thankfully I don't do that sort of work any longer. added: Assuming this as applied to the Volunteer hero that saved the girl at the cliff, I would also think he was fully aware of the risk involved during his assessment.
  13. My two cents.. Six feet is shallow enough to hold your breath long enough to access the situation. Having been confined space trained in the UK. The O2 level needs to be around 21%. It becomes hazardous at 19.5%. You will get ringing in the ears, shortness of breath and other symptoms before you lose conciousness. Various gases to worry about like C02 and Nitrogen. Both, if memory serves, displace oxygen so just sticking your head in the hole can cause you to lose conciousness. The training stated that if there was ever an incident where there was someone in the space that needed assistance you were to call but this is one of those judgment calls I think. I know where this is leading. Had the circumstances been a bit different (the hole deeper, combustable gases that could be detected by smell) I would have called first.
  14. Received from a friend and thought I would share. There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq in January. In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January. That's just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq. When some claim that President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state the following: a. FDR led us into World War II. b. Germany never attacked us; Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost an average of 112,500 per year. c. Truman finished that war and started one in Korea North Korea never attacked us . From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost. An average of 18,334 per year. d. John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us. e. Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost .. an average of 5,800 per year. f. Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent. Bosnia never attacked us He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions. g. In the years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya , Iran , and, North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking. But Wait It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.. We've been looking for evidence for chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records. It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick. It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!! Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB ! The Military morale is high! The biased media hopes we are too ignorant to realize the facts But wait! There's more! JOHN GLENN (on the Senate floor - January 26, 2004) Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one man's explanation of why men and women in the armed services do what they do for a living. This IS a typical, though sad, example of what some who have never served think of the military. Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn): 'How can you run for Senate when you've never held a real job?' Senator Glenn (D-Ohio): 'I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank.' 'I ask you to go with me . . as I went the other day... to a veteran's hospital and look those men .. with their mangled bodies in the eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job! You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and Orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee... and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their DADS didn't hold a job You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job? What about you?' For those who don't remember, During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA Now he's a Senator!
  15. As a 12 year old this was exactly what we would do. All the excess nightcrawlers that we couldn't use fishing we would sell to the tackle shop for something like $5 for a gallon. Wet work it was too. Mind you, I didn't make a whole lot of money.
  16. Has he got wings? I also see the trees that block your satelite
  17. Sorry to hear about your Sister Jim and your Father Mr. M. Losing someone is never an easy thing. I count my self lucky (touch wood) as I haven't lost anyone for a while- guess I'm due either way. FWIW Chris, I don't see myself as being any more responsible than any other person out there. I would like to think that I might recognize when someone isn't doing so well and maybe make a difference if it came down to it. Not to be a hero but to do the right thing. Spreading the word is easy but acting on it may be a different matter.
  18. Its open to interpretation right? I might have found it offensive if it werent' for the one in the center. BTW, its probably no good to look while at work.
  19. Snopes was the first thing I checked too Chris. I don't like posting things that are questionable.. Happy Belated Birthday by the way.
  20. I've seen this before a long time ago and can't remember seeing it here nor did I see it in the search section within the past year. I fish with a few 'older' fellas and it never hurts to be aware of the signs. Thought I should maybe share this. STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters.... S.T.R. STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .....she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke . Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S * Ask the individual to SMILE. T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently, (i.e. Is it sunny out today?) R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999 immediately describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke.
  21. Popular day to have a birthday.... Not that you had much choice. Anyway Happy Birthday 5 members are celebrating their birthday today Chris Plumb(47), scoop(25), Lady Helen Charters(45), richjones(21), mark_f_a(28)
  22. Physical security isn't like it was years ago. Now all you have to do is put data on a thumb drive and drop it your pocket. Laptops, CDs, PDAs, size makes it way too easy. How many times have you wasted time looking for your keys? Better yet how many times recently have you seen it in the news? If it were attached to a toilet seat I doubt it would be lost very often. I'd like to meet you one day Chesters. Cynical? HA
