  4. the sfc that wurzel approached to increase the bass mls , proposed a 40cm mls and a mesh size of 100mm, after rejecting the stour and orwell rsa fishery proposal , in jan 05. The same committee proposed a mls 0f 38cm and a mesh size of 100mm for the current bass mls consultation. cheers Tom

  6. "Is there any proof that tackel business's have suffered because of a decline in fish stocks" if you compare the number of charter boats that worked out of Bradwell marina 25 years ago , (there was 16) , with those working today , I understand there are now two , with one skipper spending part of the year working in florida. The anglers that filled the 16 boats , all needed , bait , tackle, etc I used to organise a number of charter boat fishing trips from bradwell every year for a group of very keen anglers, as the fishing declined , we stopped going. I have not stopped fishing but 75% of the group have and now spend their money elsewhere. cheers Tom

  16. Hi Peter This is not a pop at you , I want to get issues resolved as much as you do and to air the angling vs commercials arguments so both sides to gain a better understanding . I need to clear a few points from earlier postings , no the RSA dependant jobs (19,000) do not include Defra , though with the formation of the new inshore department with a responsibility to angling as part of its remit, that could now increase possibly to 19,002. I just wish we had a few more in defra that looked after RSA , especially with regard to economics and social issues. The point that is confusing me the most is , you state that by increasing the mls to 45cm will allow “Johnny foreigner” to exploit the 36-45 gap in the market and you want a level playing field . So when you proposed the 40cm mls for bass at the Jan 05 meeting of the ESFJC , how would have that worked then ? What was your plan to stop the exploitation of the 36cm – 40cm gap The 40 cm mls would have only applied within the 6 mile limit , so some uk boats could still catch 36cm bass outside 6 miles , but the small inshore boats who remain within the 6 mile would competing with “jonny foreigner” and other uk boats . How would the level playing field that you ask for now, have worked then. Also why are you not petitioning the EU ? Just to finish off , you ask for a “say” as a stakeholder , that has always been the case , a courtesy, that has not always been extended to RSA , at national or local level (stour and orwell). Cheers Tom
  17. It could be worse , Tom could be in charge fisheries today, tomorrow the world cheers Tom
  18. Some of the above, also because there is no problem with bass stocks, they can see that left alone they can carry on earning a living in the futrure as they have in the past. Why fix some thing that aint broke Hi Peter This is working on the assumption that commercial sector of the fishing industry are the primary and only stakeholder. I agree with Steves sentiments of "what do you consider broke ?" There are of course now 19,000 rsa dependant jobs, who also seek opportunities to earn a living, the level of employement has now steadied , after a decline. ie bradwell marina had 15 charter boats , it now has 2 1/2, the other half of the year the skipper fishes in America , all that revenue now being spent in another country. The current science and surveys (scale samples ) shows that growth rates from 36cm to 45cm are now between 12 to 18 months. Speaking to a number of local wet fish outlets , there is a demand for fish over 45cm , which commands a better price. So with an increase to 45cm, the Bass fishery will have benefits for all stakeholders and a better long term chance of reamining sustainable. cheers Tom
  19. Hi Peter taken from the bass mls letter on the defra website The legislation would also prohibit the sale, exposure or offer for sale, or possession for the purpose of sale of bass which is less that 45cm. This would apply throughout England.[/i] I assume this would apply to all european fisherman ? it states the landing and carriage applies to uk vessels only but not the sale . How many foreign trawlers are we talking about and what do you base your statement on that if the BMP was extended to 12 it would only be marginaly better. And why does the commercial sector of the fishing industry feel it isn't nessecary or doesn't want the implementation of the BMP ? cheers Tom
  20. "especially the French" would you be so kind as to expand please cheers Tom
  21. Hi wurzel you will be pleased to know , I was there to and there was some very interesting people to talk to . cheers Tom
  22. Hi All from the evidence given to the Efra committee earlier this year The RSA sector primarily targets a fairly small group of mostly inshore fish, spending some £500 million a year doing so. To give examples, the total reported value of commercial landings for a number of these species in England and Wales is as follows (Defra statistics). Bass £3.2 million Conger Eels £0.16 million Dabs £0.085 million Flounder £0.04 million Rays £3.2 million Other £2.5 million (includes mullet, sharks, tope and smoothound) Total £9.185 million cheers Tom
  23. On monday, i fished Orford Island, Suffolk, (at the Crouch) , there where 20 anglers. A mixed bag of fish where caught but most caught between 5-7 codling , but they all averaged 40cms. So these are very young immmature fish, don't forget only 50% of a shoal of 55cm cod will actually be sexualy mature. I seem to remember also ,that the 1999 exceptional Haddock year group, was one of those events that only take place once in a while. There was similiar Haddock stock explosion, back in 1937 and 1950 something ( I can't remember the exact dates). The following years the haddock reverted to normal levels. As they say one swallow don't make a summer. cheers Tom
  24. Spasor when I was about 12-13 , my mate's dad purchased a "Winfield" beachcaster and reel from woolworths , he then took us to Dungeness for the cod , the cold froze the grease in his new reel and he couldn't cast. we just laughed our heads off. cheers Tom
  25. I spoke with the local SFI at Lowestoft last week , some of the powers that have changed , certain infringements , have been decrimilised and they will now have the abilty to impose on the spot fines. A new system of recording these fines has been introduced as well. cheers Tom
