  1. Find out what sort of fishing he wants it for, then go to the local tackleshop for advice. There are so many and net even £20 and everyone has their favourite. My kids have different reels bought as needed. I got them from Lathams of Potter Heigham when we were holidaying on the Broads.
  2. In an emergency, either try to borrow some alarms, or use a bit of silver paper and watch it move up and down
  3. Can't really blame the EA for this one, as it's the Post Office as subcontractors who cannot cope. I applied for mine some time ago and they arrived within 3 days. I got an email from the EA for each licence reminding me to renew, followed by 2 letters telling me the same, after I had paid and was waiting for the new ones. It's the usual case of no joined up thinking, so the EA and the PO don't have a communal database to see what is happening. The EA have a system theat sends out reminders without knowing that you already have renewed. Wasting more time and money that could be better spent elsewhere
  4. I phoned the Customer Service number given and after about 15 minutes waiting I spoke to someone. They agreed that I could not buy online before the birthday (cr*p systems design). What I have to do is to ring on his birthday and get a reference number over the phone, whilst paying with my card in the other hand. I will write to them with my opinions. The reverse is true, such that if you reach the age of 65 during the year, you have to pay the full amount on 1st April. I didn't ask the question about a refund, as if you don't buy the licence until your birthday you wil pay the reduced amount. Inflexible is the word I think I am looking for. They might reach the 20th Century if the work hard. I think the 21st is out of reach at the moment
  5. I am in a quandry, as my little one will be 12 during the season. At the beginning he will not need a licence, but will he need one once he becomes 12. I will be on holiday on his birthday, so I can't buy before we go as he will be too young, and the web site will not accept his date of birth so how do I get one. Can I claim that he was under age at the start of the licence period, so won't need one until the start of the next period in 2011.
  6. They were only after their dinner !! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/8570815.stm
  7. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8555378.stm Funny that it is only a problem when Indusytry and building are suffering. Not a mention in the article about waterways
  8. Did a little Google for York lakeside lodges and found this on the Hoseasons page Excellent year round fishing is available for carp, bream, trench, roach and pike on the beautiful 10 acre lake (Adults £20pw, Senior citizens and children £10pw each Have a look for further details
  9. I forgot that, I will forthwith attend a tackle shop to buy some hemp I forgot that, I will forthwith attend a tackle shop to buy some hemp
  10. THe Domestic Controller has decreed that this years summer holiday will be at Otter Falls near Honiton. It has all she and the next generation need on site and nearby, and 3 lakes where I can fish. I looked on the site info, and there are few rules, but includes no maggote, worms, or pellets. I was going to pack various tins of Dynamite sweet corn, a selection of artificial baits and some flavourings. Has anyone fished here recently who can give any advice. It doesn't look as if it will be crowded, as only about 20 dwelling on site, and Google earth shows lots of space
  11. Just look in your box of bits for DIY. you should find the right size there. Failing that, try the new blue Fairy liquid tops, the are the proverbial dogs bits
  12. BBC link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wiltshire/8474265.stm some of the rescued fish look rather large. Has anyone fished there
  13. Word of caution, all stores do not carry all ranges. Ours nearby in Basingstoke does not cater for horrse riding. Check theie website for your local store and what departments it has. Fishing gear was cheapish, but not a large selection. Bait was cheap, but you have to pay an annual £4 fee for a card to get the discounts. Worth it if you use it a lot and the travelling is not too great
  14. Looks as if there could be a business opportunity there for a small group to fish it out of their summer season. Could raise a bob or two, raffling the tickets for a charity. A couple of days a year for some responsible anglers
  15. I'd go to the AGM and ask questions, but sit near to the exit !!
  16. I have a reasonable sized pond, 12' x 6' x 4' deep. There is quite a buildup of leaves etc and I was considering getting a vacuum to clean it up. I tried a cheap one that uses hose pressure to suck through a muslin bag, but all that achieves is a mucky pond with very little debris in the bag. I have seen some large ones like the Blagdon Pond Monsta about 150 ntes. Do they do the business without affecting the fish. Some I have looked at seem to empty the pond into a container that need emptying freqently
  17. This might sound like a silly question, but how does on measure the size of a round/pan landing net. Is it front to back or side to side. I was in the local Go Outdoors superstore and I couldn't reconcile the quoted sizes as the 20" looked smaller than the 18". Some were circular, and one was sort of an oval with a flat front
  18. Jst the one well deserved award this year in the Honours list. Well done Fred !!

  20. His book Angling:Fundamental Principles taught me a lot about the environment and it's care. A true thinker who will be fondly remembered
  21. Have you tried tackle bargains. link is tacklebargains.co.uk from the front page of this website
  22. Thanks for that. The alternative unfortunately is too small in the accomodation ara, as I need 3 bedrooms. I will look elsewhere on this sceptred isle, as I don't fancy wall to wall puddle fishing
  23. That won't count as a record, novice barbel angler using bread . How very non PC . Well done that man !! Ps a cane rod and centre pin would really rub it in
  24. Has any member been there for a holiday and fished either of the two lakes. It looks attractive, and with something for the Domestic Controller and the anklebiters to do while Dad does the serious fishing
  25. Check out Bracknell Herons, they have a few waters and day tickets are available from Steves cabin at Great Hollands, or the cafe at Mill pond. South Hill Park lake is good for starters, with lots of 3-7 lb carp to put a bend in the rod. They are not carp puddles, and not really crowded
