  1. It might sound obvious, but why not ask the other carp anglers on the lake !!
  2. To get Hemp (or any other bait that is not purely for fishing, such as dog/cat bikies, wheat etc) go to a pet shop, or large wholesalers. it's cheep cheep !!
  3. Don't know about the tackle, but their web site is not the best I have seen. The competition is more than a year out of date.
  4. I still use my 300s's, as I have a pair with 3 extra spools. 2 shallow spools and 3 deep spools in total. I have had them since the mid 1980's, with no problems. Can't think of a reason to change them, but maybe I won't change wat ain't broke. Still I like real ale and malt whiskey, and still measure things in feet and inches. I don't catch muh big stuff as I can't afford the price of the day ticket, but Carp to 15lbs are handled easily with them, matched to my handmade NW Blanks fibre glass rod
  5. If you programme in all the relevant numbers, you can contact home, emergency services (may not be you needs them, but the chap next to you), record fish committee , and all sorts of people you may need to help photograph the BIG ONE
  6. Nice competition, but to take it by the 6th July 2003 is a bit naff. Most of us have already booked for this year
  7. Hang it up to dry and wipe your rod when you get home and they last a lot longer I find
  8. Or rather the URL is as follows (htm not html) http://www.maggotdrowning.com/petition/bbc.htm
  9. Don't forget, when submitting to the BBC, keep it objective and not abusive
  10. To complain use this url http://www.bbc.co.uk/feedback/?mailto=diysos@bbc.co.uk don't let me be the only one, make our voice heard     [Message edited to get the url working] [ 14. February 2003, 09:40 PM: Message edited by: John S ]
  11. Did any see the show last night . The team took a break to go fishing. All done tongue in cheek, except when they caught fish the silly pr**ts then threw them back in from a great height, with the cameraman following the flight. Talk about giving us 'proper' anglers a bad name. Is there an email address we can write to to express our concern. I have registered with the BBC forum and attempted to post my concern on the DIYSOS board, so will be interested to see if it appears
  12. I use very fine glass paper and work carefully. If the rest of the rod is on good nick be careful not to sand down the blank. Re-ring and carefully paint on a couple of coats of varnish. All equipment should be available from your local tackle shop. Don't forget hot melt glue for the tip ring. Be careful when removing the old tip ring, as it should be glued on the same way, and only a small bit of heat will be necessary (no blow torches or gas burners. There may be a more modern book on how to do it, mine is 40 years old, but still valid
  13. Sir Alex Ferguson, when being asked why his team failed to land a single fish replied "We were wearing the wrong colour shirts"
  14. Gordon Brown " It was a twenty, but after allowing for inflation and future growth it will be a forty next week. We'll call it Prudence"
  15. Nelson (after sinking all the bait boats on the lake) "I see no ships" (thank heaven)
  16. Editor of CQ magazine - "Yes it was a mirror carp, but we airbrushed out the scales as we needed a leather for the front cover"
  17. Queen Victoria after losing yet another salmon on the Balmoral beat: "We are not amused"
  18. Schoolmaster to young Chris Yates 'Boy, you will learn to love the cane when you get older'
  19. try these www.floats-direct.com for cheap floats from the Channel Islands or I have found www.castawayfishing.f9.co.uk quite cheap and reliable and also Bennets of Sheffield at http://www.bosfish.co.uk
  20. I've used it for the last 20 years (not the same spool!!), and have never worried about it. I worry more about my ability to tie the hook and play the fish. I don't measure breaking strain or check the diameter, just load it onto my old Mitchell 300s and lob it out. Change it every few seasons, and strip off a couple of yards after each trip to avoid weakening by the shot. Never lost a fish by the line breaking. No connection with the company apart for a satisfied customer
  21. There was one a few years back called Secret Lake, which was very good, but unfortunately was only a one-off. I think a cross between Chris Yates and Matt Hayes would go down well. A Jack Hargreaves/Mr Crabtree type program following the progress of some young/inexperienced anglers as they learn (in modern parlance it's called a fly-on-the-wall documentary) might attract a good audience, especially if there was an attainable target to aim for, such as a target weight of fish in a fixed time, or a specimen weight. Perhaps one of the commercial match fisheries could be the venue
  22. This is my Intrepid ROLA Is it a real Intrepid, as the name is on a sticky label
  23. Whilst looking for my Continental which has done a disappearing act, I found an Intrepid ROLA which I bought in a charity shop along with an Intrepid standard. I have a picture of it on my hard drive in jpg format, but couldn't figure out how to include it in the post. Can anyone help on this Ta
  24. I too have an Intrepid Continental, is a sort of metalflake light green. It was the more upmarket model of the time. The plastic grip on the handle is missing, and the helical gearing is a bit stiff. I can't use it as the bail arm is somewhat grooved with use, and would chafe line quite quickly. I seem to remember buying it in the late 50's/early 60's. I had it repaired once by Morritt's, who made no charge. It's a left hand wind only. There was a place I seem to remember some where in the West country that used to repair or refurbish them, but again that was in the 1980's. I even have the plastic collar supplied to increase the spool diameter, saving line. aah, such are memoriesMemories
