One thing I forgot to add was that after having home highway installed I would get line faults resulting in service outages up to 3 times a year. I am sure this was related to the conversion of the line from PSTN to ISDN. I had never had a fault previously. What made up for this was that BT have a compensation scheme for each day without service. Something like £25. This scheme virtually paid for my homehighway and even left me with a small profit. It's good to screw over BT.

Elton, I had home highway for around 2 years before switching to adsl in Dec last year. I mainly used 1 channel and the speed I got was around 7k/s. On a modem I would get around 5k/s. So the difference wasn't spectacular. The cost was high at around £30 per month line rental and £25 isp. This was offset by free internet calls from my isp. (I think Virgin 24/7) and also a call allowance that comes with home highway. It came with a dialup backup number as well so no extra cost there. With friend and family i wasn't paying for ANY calls at all and my phone bill was basically just line rental. I was on the internet every day for several hours. The good thing about ISDN was I was virtually guaranteed a very stable 7.5k/s connection. Extremely good for gaming with a sub 50 ping! ADSL cost is similar or slightly less but much faster speed. Hope that helps!

Yup thanks for the great advice! I've found that there's only so much you can learn from reading etc but knowledge from experience is invaluable. That applies to fishing too!

Is it true that to catch tench you have to be out at the crack of dawn? When are they active and for how long? Does it depend on the season or temp? I have only ever caught one tench before and that was about noon on a hot summer day. I can't go early mornings you see so maybe that's why they are so rare for me!

"Still fishing..."

Hehe the bottom line is I still don't know what the bottomline is! But seriously, is it where you fish with a backlead and have the line hugging the bottom?
-
I posted this in the carp forum by mistake (as some of you know). Newt - thanks for the report button info. I'll be sure to use it next time this happens! Not that I'm saying anything but phew could have gotten ugly...

Sorry but what's bottomline?

I too take dry over wet any day but I do carry waterproofs because I sometimes end up in questionable weather. I've always felt that anything that won't get used at least once should be left at home. I always try and go with a plan of action and take the right tackle to carry it out. My other rod is my contingency so that I can try other methods. I've been pretty successful so far and I enjoy planning my trips like this. Light and mobile is definitely the way to go!

Why is it that I always see anglers lugging barrows of gear like they are going on a 6 month holiday or something? Is there really a need to bring the whole tackle shop with you? My own gear consists of a 4x6 inch slim box for ALL my bits, 2 rods a net and bankstick, a small folding chair and a bucket for all the bait. Walking and carrying this stuff with shoulder straps is a breeze. I'm even able to wave with my free hand to the chaps pushing and pulling trolleys and looking seriously knackered. I've also just invested in a fly fishing vest and a rod holdall so I guess I can wave with both hands from now on!

I was confused about prawns, shrimps etc too but I think I got it sorted now hehe! In UK everything seems stunted: shrimp are so small you cannot see them prawns are less than 1 inch length tiger prawns are less than 3 inches length king prawns and bigger just don't exist Correct me if I am wrong!

Looks nifty and something I could do with! Did you design and make that yourself because I was just browsing Cabelas and saw something similar for storing lures?
-
Yup the one I foul hooked felt like a little carp. I was thinking I don't remember them being this strong.
-
Well I'll get over it 'cos I like fishing so much. Just got a bit squeamish cos it was its eye but it swam away like nothing happened. Live and learn I guess.
-
Went to a small pond yesterday afternoon and had fun catching roach with just maggots. I was into a big one and well pleased but when I got it to the surface I noticed the hook was next to its eye. It was actually in the ring around the eye not in it but it was touching. Didn't feel too good after that so I called it a day. I was using a small waggler and all the bites were quite positive. The float would dip quickly, come back up for a second or two then slowly submerge. I always struck when it slowly submerged. First foul hooked fish I've had. Was it me or do these things happen? Thanks. All things considered I think I will look elsewhere for a cheaper deal. Cheers all.

Thinking of buying from this place but the website seems a bit funny as in not too secure looking. Anyone had problems shopping online from them? Prompt delivery? How's the service? Etc... Ta

Hmmm no float rigs (yet) but the other stuff is quite interesting!
-
Some of the old coarse threads about float rigs and shotting patterns point to the rigs section. How do I get there 'cos I can't seem to find a link from the main page.

I've read about dipping them in water or laying them on their backs and tickling them but I think these are so they don't roll into balls. Nothing about getting bittern but the obvious thing to use is a disgorger or forceps and don't put your fingers in its mouth! btw I've never caught one so...

Thanks for all the help. I went with the Metaloid in the end. Great reel and so smooth!
-
Anyone used/using the Epix or Metaloid? I'm looking to get one of these but can't decide which one.

I know but July is when I actually move down south. Can't wait!
