  1. Thanks again. Well how did I do? Bobs pond - had 3 bream to 3.5lb and bits Brickyard farm lakes - if it's the one with a camp site, they were looking for £50 for a years pass plus extra on a day ticket basis, so left that one alone, talking to a bloke in one of the tackle shops in the area, it seems like alot of ppl are boycotting it due to this. Welham lakes - not too bad, managed to catch 6 carp in the 3 to 5 lb bracket, although I lost one which felt bigger, but didn't really have the time to fish it as long as I would have liked (3.5hrs), but will try it again, perhaps in the spring. Also tried a place called Selly bridge farm? small perch first cast then nothing for 3 hrs. my mate on the next peg was catching small perch and rudd every couple of minutes for 2 of these hours before he slowed down to a bite every 10 minutes. with an hour to go bit the bullet and moved to the other side of him. In that hour I must have had 150 rudd in the 1 to 4 oz range. Went back there a couple of days later, with similar results, with the aim of trying to get into the bigger roach/rudd which are supposed to be in there and perhaps the bream, but there must have been thousands of small rudd in that swim as I just could not feed them off and get the bigger fish in. used around a pint each of hemp, casters, pinkies and maggots, with some pellets and sweetcorn as well (no bites on these larger baits at all). still, a fish every 5 to 10 seconds may have helped me in a view that I want to give match fishing a try next year, although the use of a 5m whip may have helped. Thanks again.
  2. cheers, how would you fish these lakes, ie. use natural baits on waggler/feeder, or are they used to seeing pellets etc. Thanks [ 14. October 2003, 12:36 PM: Message edited by: AndyM ]
  3. Howdy, I'm off work for a week looking after the in-laws dogs/cats/fish etc. etc. while they are on holiday and have planned to do abit of fishing while I'm here. Usually I just stick to sea fishing, but this time thought I'd do abit of course instead. Problem is I haven't a clue as to decent waters in the area which are fishing well, and wondered if anyone here had any recommendations before I try out the tackle shops in the area. the type of fishing I'm after is general pleasure, ideally on a stillwater, having never fished a river, although I'd be willing to give it a try if there was good sport to be had. Location base is near Malton in North Yorkshire and I'd be willing to drive 30 miles or so from here. Cheers in advance.
  4. having just returned to the sport myself I personally haven't seen a decine, infact the number of junior anglers on my local stretch of canal is very healthy. when I was in my early teens there would be myself, brother and a couple of mates there, now I see perhaps 20 or more within a few hundred yards of each other. The numbers have now decreased during the week with the nights drawing in, but they are there at the weekends, plus I've also seen familys together on the bank. I do however think this is the exception rather than the rule and really you need to look at how our lives have changed, even in just the last 10 to 20yrs or so. More single parent families or families where both parents are working, so the kids go to a child minder etc. after school rather than being taken or allowed to go fishing. Family holidays are more likly to be taken abroad rather than our own seaside resorts, how many people here started fishing with a cheap 6ft rod and reel setup bought on holiday and fished off the pier? or even crab lines? I know that's how I started and the reason why I've got the bug again after a recent holiday with my own family. The closing of local tackle shops might have more to do with the media we are using here, as more and more people are buying over the internet as there are more savings to be made plus it easier and quicker to compare different retailers, you just have to look at the local high street, where butchers, hardware shops etc. etc. have closed down due to the customers shopping at large supermarkets and chain stores where there is a greater selection, it doesn't mean that there are any less customers. Like I say, these are the impressions I've built up over the last 4 months or so since starting course fishing again, and I couldn't comment on club membership numbers, although I have to admit that junior membership of alsorts of hobbies, in fact I woundn't go so far as to say just juniors, but perphaps my own age group (20's and 30's) just don't seem to "have time" to join a club even if they partake in the hobby, as this is something I have noticed within other clubs/societies I've been a member of for a longer time.

  8. Due to this problem, importation of Snakeheads into the US was banned around 12mths ago (I think, although it could have been the walking catfish), and luckly the numbers imported into this country are fairly low and usually on an order first basis. It's also a fish which is less desired in this country, with only specialist fishkeepers with large tanks, prepared to pay the price tag and the associated cost in feeding them, as they tend to be hard to get over onto prepared foods and need live "feeder" fish (poor quality guppies, stunted fry etc.), which again are not often sold in the uk. Your more likly to find fish like south american red tailed catfish out growing tanks and being dump in uk waters, which wouldn't last too long anyway due to the cold. UK shops also tend to be better at accepting unwanted fish compared to there US counterparts. [ 25. September 2003, 05:30 PM: Message edited by: AndyM ]
  9. Cheers, was thinking of the okumas as I have one already which I use for float fishing and I'm happy with it. I could also use this one for tip work, although I'm really after a second reel so I can leave one rod out on an alarm say, while float or quiver tipping with the current one. I know £30 isn't going to get me a top notch reel, but until the wife goes back to work after her maternity leave, I'll find hard to justify paying much more than this for just a few months fishing, after which funds should then allow me to buy something better (unless the visit of Santa max's the CC's ).
  10. Can anyone recomend a decent baitrunner reel upto around the £30 mark mainly for feeder use for bream/roach/tench & small carp etc on stillwaters, but still has enough in it to handle occasional use targeting larger carp and the thicker lines this brings. thanks in advance.
  11. Well the only case of court action I know of against what ppl have said on the internet can be found here http://petsforum.com/psw/ basicly a group of ppl who weren't happy with the service they recieved from a supplier and expressed a view to others to also not use them in future. In regards to Matt's posts re. the rod rest, he says that TFG have no near future plans, yet in another responce lower down the page Hi Matt, Could you please tell me the make of that green rod rest you use on Wet Nets, and where I can get one? Many thanks, Norman Hi Norman, It is a Boss Rod Rest that I bought years ago. I have had an incredible number of requests like yours and the answer is always the same - I don't know where you can get one. We are working on a new rod rest design at TFG that is even better. Should be out by Christmas. Check out the TFG website on http://www.totalfishinggear.co.uk  [ 19. September 2003, 01:12 PM: Message edited by: AndyM ]
  12. When waggler fishing, which is the best way of attaching a hooklength, only ask as most of the mags miss this connection out. the options I can think of are either knotting the two together (have no problems with this method with thicker lines, but can't seem to manage fine lines, plus you have to cut them appart), loop to loop (works fine when connecting, but again problems occur when swapping with fine lines, as they tend to tighten up after a fish, meaning I need to cut them off again), or using a small swivel (which might not enable the shotting pattern I'm after). Likewise does our decision change with pole floats? [ 18. September 2003, 02:41 PM: Message edited by: AndyM ]
  13. on cable you share the bandwidth with for example the rest of the people on you street (or however many people are connected the the green box somewhere nearby), so the more ppl connected, the slower things become, so the bottle neck occurs on an almost local level. ADSL on the other hand should run at full speed until you get to our exchange, where it then enters onto the main network (which can still bottleneck) so should be a more stable system speed wise. snotty, after 5.5km the signal degrades to the point where errors start to occur, hence a garrenteed connection can't be supplied, on dial up, data is passed along the lines much slower, hence gives a "reliable" connection to the exchange (where the signal is boosted again).
  14. Could try melafix or Aquarian first aid, which are a tea tree oil type solution, and doesn't stain (clear solution). It's a natural anti bacterial, which works well on open wounds or fin/lip damage. Again you should be able to get it from Aquarium supply shops or garden centres with pond sections, perhaps buying a large bottle then dividing it up into smaller ones for the kids. Doesn't smell to bad either (menthol type of smell).
  15. Well if it makes you feel any better I too blanked for the first time this season last thursday, with only a couple of very shy bites in a 4hr session (18:30 thru 22:30), which should have been a good time to fish. Made up for it last night though with my best roach of the summer from the same swim, a pair of them each getting up towards 2lb.

  17. thanks for the replies, but to fill in the gaps the hook pattern was 611's and both mainline and hooklength were the same brand (Maxima). It just seemed funny that I was hooking the fish, bringing them to the surface, then off they got. Out of all the fish which I managed to land only 10%-20% needed me to unhook them (all perch strangely), the roach and skimmers all shed the hook in the landing net. Well I'm off fishing again tonight, so might try the combo again and see how I do. Hopefully it will be a better time of day for the tench and bream and their extra weight should allow the hook to set correctly, as I do think I was well over powered for what I was catching. Anyway, thanks again.
  18. Went out on Sunday to a local section of canal, with aim of trying to get into some of the decent bream. Well I had no luck on that score, but I kept on losing small fish (roach/skimmers) on the retrive. the only thing I did differently to usual was to up the mainline to 4lb and used a 2.5lb hook length to size 18 barbless, rather than 2.5lb straight though. Why was this? did the extra strenght in the main line cause me to "bump" them off the hook, or not allow me to set it correctly in the first place? Is there or can anyone give me a guide to what are suitable matches for mainline to hook lengths etc. if this is indeed the problem. Thanks [ 26. August 2003, 11:37 AM: Message edited by: AndyM ]
  19. had the DNS prob myself earlier. RE. the back button prob, have a look at your browers settings and cache options. For IE users goto Tools>>Internet Options>>Temp Internet files>>settings, and select either automatic or every visit to page. The other two options will just load the page as it was the last time it was downloaded onto the PC (used to speed up navigating around websites, but not much good in forums!) For Netscape browsers goto Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced>>Cache>> then under the Compare document in cache to doc on network (or something very similar depending on Version) select >>Every time You might want to change the setting back for speed purposes afterwards for general browsing, especially on a dial up connection. 20. What type of camera do you have? as I think this facility only works with Epson cameras.
  21. quote: Originally posted by billy5000: [QBi was in my local town 2day and went into a bt phone booth and tried to ring the 118 118 number and what do you know its barred on the bt phone boxes(i assume they cannot be too happy with this new directory enquires at a supposed half price of 192) funny that cos i had to end up doing 192 but from home 118 118 works fine and i was supprised to see a bar on the number in the bt box. just seen a tv ad saying they just changed the 118 118 to 118500 more bl***Y changes sorry andym didnt read your post close enough billy [/QB] 118 118 isn't a BT service, and it's a service I think you need to register for first, and then the cost goes onto the phone bill. As such you can't charge it to a phone box, hence the posible reason why it's barred (192 was free from a phone box last time I used it).
  22. the Sunday People I think ran an artical yesterday with a load of numbers and rated them all based on a couple of calls they made I think, and the cost of these calls. Their results found that the new companys took longer to find the numbers, and when your paying by the minute it added up. The winner was the old 192, as it was a fixed charge for two numbers regardless of the time it took to find them, with it's BT replacement second (118 500). By the way, yes I do work for BT so am really only allowed to comment on BT and not other providers, although I'm not biased towards BT, as after all I want to pay as little as posible as well. The reason why the change is due to OFTEL trying to open up the DE market, and the current 192 automaticlly routed you though to the network providers DE service rather than the one of your choice, hence not an open market. What will happen in the future, is if you dial 192, you will get a msg providing you with a 118 xxx number randomly from the many companys providing the service. Chesters1, 999 won't change as it's not something which is open for competion, ie. you can't choose which ambulance service you get etc. (hang on, that might be the next thing this goverment might do) plus all the number changes are set by OFTEL and not BT (imagine the cost these number changes have on BT and other service providers as well in regards to routing, upgrades, databases etc. etc. so not something done for the hell of it). The reason why you need a BT line for BT Internet is due to the fact it uses a product called Surftime for it's billing or "free" allowances and gets routed on a certain network, which no other operator apart from BT provides, pay as you go access on the other hand should be accessable from any network operators line. NTL etc. will have there own products which the ISP's can choose to work with for billing etc. but these will be designed with there own network in mind, and not BT's. End of the day though, BT Openworld could choose another network provider, much like BT Retail have set up a deal with T-Mobile rather than O2 (formally BT Cellnet), but don't worry, I'm confused so what it's like for everyone else I wouldn't like to think.
