  1. Thanks for that Steve but I'll just ask the question again as you obviously didn't see it. Does anybody have a link or source for scientific papers regarding bass sizes and maturity?
  2. Well done guys, excellent result At least not everybody in the exec is as blinkered as Ross Finnie.
  3. Does anybody have a link or source for scientific papers regarding bass sizes and maturity? The only one I came across is in french, and its a pdf so I can't translate it easily either. I'm just wondering how much effect moving from 36 to 40cm will have. I've seen a lot of comment saying that 40cm is useless as it makes no difference but I don't think that is true. My understanding is that at 36cm almost no females are mature, at 45cm about 50% are and at 55cm alomst all of them are. That was why 45cm was a compromise anyway, as a move to 55cm is the best in the long term. What I'd like to know is what % of females are mature at 40cm as I'm sure its more than at 36cm.
  4. This is the thread but I think the pics are toast. http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.p...tripping+anchor
  5. Ah but we could of, we were just wussies

  7. You can also troll a redgill off a dropper above a spinner like a dexter wedge.
  8. I totally respect Barramundi's right to C&R, and he gets my respect for doing so. If he conducts his business that way then great, and as he said, his only 'mistake' was in not making it clear to paintfly before they fished and he showed his mark. Although I willl take for the pot I would respect somebody elses choice not too. If they showed me a mark they parctice 100% C&R on then I would not take fish from it out of repsect for thier opinion. I just don't think we should criticise others for not being 100% C&R. Mind you, taking undersize fish or significant numbers should be highlighted as illegal, damaging to the sport and/or bad practice.
  9. Congratulation zippy, well deserved Even if I had been able to fish it there is no way I would have managed 14 species
  10. It works here as well where estuary waters mix with the open sea. For example, I've read many times that targeting that brownline when fishing off the piers around the Tees is the most successful.
  11. Usually no weight, just the lure, but it depends on the lure and the depth of the water. If you are trolling a shallow diver running around will 2ft that will be fine in shallow water. A deep diver, like my fav Rapala Sliver, runs around 8-12f. If you need to troll deeper then you can use a weight on a boom and fish the lure off a long trace, that way you can fish a floating shallow diver deep. Simple huh?
  12. Somerset posted while I was typing.... power = volts x amps so therefore amps = power/volts which in this case = 10w/12v So yep, 10W is 0.833amps and that is a lot. My Matrix17 and GPS combined is less than 0.25amps. However, it should still last longer than 1 minute so something is definitely wrong. It may be the battery is not charging properly, but it is more likely the unit itself. If it was previously blowing fuses due to a high current drain then maybe there was more at fault than the power cable.
  13. Bit of a thorny issue this. It seems that for some conservation is a black and white issue and you should not take any fish, or bass at least, for the pot. If you are full on vegan and wouldn't dream of eating fish anyway, then that is fine, but if like me you like to eat fish and consider it to be a vital component of a good diet then you have to consider the environmental implications of the source of that fish. There is quite a bit of debate at the moment over how sustainable fish farming is and I certainly think it is not all its cracked up to be. There is a lot of hidden environmental damage with fish farming and in my opinion assuming that farming is the way to go to preserve wild stocks is wrong. I still think the best 'farm' is a healthy and thriving sea and mother nature the best farmer. Personally I only eat fish I have caught, or somebody fishing with me has. The quality is so much better than bought fish, from whatever source, and it has minimal impact through bycatch or environmental damage. So the issue for me is about taking suitable fish in suitable numbers and of a suitable size. If these bass were undersize and immature then that is the issue rather than the fact it was 3 fish. Bass are localised and yes if you take too many you will destroy the local population, but that doesn't mean it is wrong to take any at all, it is just a case of the numbers and sizes that you take. Where it becomes a grey area is when the fish is already dead, legally it has to go back, but I can understand the waste not want not mentallity, I've done it myself.
  14. Your link doesn't show how much current it draws, that is what you need to know. Do you have the owners manual? It should say in there. My 4amp/hr battery runs my Matrix17 and GPS for up to 2 days so your 7amp/hr really should be fine. Your unit will use more power due to the colour screen and higher output sonar, but a minute is ridiculous... and I'm surprised they haven't taken this seriously. There may be a short in the wiring somewhere, is the power cable OK? Any nicks or kinks? How about the pins on the plug, are they OK? Any dampness or corrosion?
  15. Been found on the west coast of Scotland before... http://www.catchalot.co.uk/usal.htm There has even been talk of specifically fishing for them as they may not be as rare as you'd think.

  19. Hmmm... maybe I can get a porgie a bit north of Bude after all http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=65471
  20. The crown WILL be heading south ... While you guys are having fun I will be on a plane heading for Houston, work has reared its ugly head and bu@@ered my plans Enjoy yourselves out there and be safe
  21. oops..missed out a pretty imprtant 'NOT'....edited now
  22. I've had my kids, 7 and 9, out in my P13 but only in very sheltered waters and not while fishing. If you expect to do any fishing then I think a proper tandem, or 2-1/2 man like the OK Malibu, is definitely the way to go. The only downside with the Malibu is the restricted storage for camping trips as the optional hatches are quite small. But if you get two of them there will be plenty of space to strap a dry bag on deck with 1 adult and 1 kid on each. Plenty of space for them to grow in to as well
  23. Deep Water dear boy.... thats where its at
  24. WD40 removes the grease, on gears and in the bearings. Just keep the WD40 on the outside of the reel and you'll be fine. Spray it on a cloth and a quick wipe is all you need, spray it directly on the reel and it might get inside.
