Ooh I like a challenge! Last winter (7/12 - 13/3) I had 12 chub from that swim. Sizes as follows...5.14, 5.12, 5.0, 4.13, 4.0, 3.14, 3.6, 3.6, 3.5, 2.10, 2.09, 2.07 and this summer 4 @ 4.14, 3.12, 2.15 & 2.06. Given that quite a few of those fish are within an ounce of each other - there may not be more than half a dozen chub in that swim - which probably explains why I've never caught more than 3 in a single visit!

Nah - Jaq is now in full scale jam (or rather bramble jelly) production - she picked 6lbs of berries in the hour or so we were there....

Could be!

Thanks for the offer - though you mentioning B means I'm pretty sure where you've been hauling them out - a swim I usually visit come the Autumn when they start to put on a bit of weight!

All the 'usual' spots that have produced in the past - Hambridge, Brimpton, Arrowhead, Colthrop. Not ventured down to Padworth yet - though that's next on the agenda!

No - lack of bats was a surprise. A few rustles in the undergrowth - but nothing identifiable!
-
Well barbel - singular - fished it on the lead on Weds without a touch!

just the sight of that float got my juices going!

Just found this intriguing piece on the BBC - no fish images shown but interesting to see examples of what the whole pictures looked like...

Blimey you must be on the mend - thought you were being let out tomorrow...

Markings do look very similar - at least our scales agree!

A bit like the London buses used to be.....
I had the same thought when I slipped the net under this beauty. Was a bit taken aback as I thought I was playing another chub until I got it to the surface. Still not as satisfying as my first ever 4 last Feb - at least that was caught by design - the 2 this season have had a certain element of flukeyness about them!!!

Colour is fine - but there's a LOT of water coming off the fields/Widmead drain - so flow is really quite strong. Tow path below the road bridge (Thatcham Station) is flooded and taped off.

River is eminently fishable if you can A; get to it and B; find a slack!

Me too - though up until 1030 I was thinking - it's not so bad - we could have gone!

How good was the roach?! ;-)
-
Yes, main weir.
-
There's a hole in the fence above the weir if that happens again!

Never heard of a 5 coming out - big 4s (4-13) but not a 5. Though given how much they are packing on weight its surely just a matter of time!

Cheers guys - pics are a bit of a disappointment, didn't have Paul or Rusty on hand to act as official photographer! Both fish were very fat to the point of being bloated - dining out on crayfish no doubt - so were quite big for their length - the 3 was 18inches from nose to fork of tail the 4 an inch longer. How much spawn would they carry in the spring - 6-8oz????

Ah, rumbled!! - though in truth last night I was trotting a swim that looked decidedly 'chubby' the problem was getting a trot down to it before the minnows and or the micro roach and dace got to the bait!
