Average stamp of chub this season from here has been in the 2-3lb class so really pleased to get 3 above that. I have to go back to 06/07 to find the last season I didn't get a 5lb+ chub - so pleased to keep that run going!

Welcome Martin!
-
Aye Rusty - twas a swim you used to see barbel 'flashing' on the shallows in the summer - now a distant memory. I'd have thought it a bit too pacey for chub - though the mill leat joins at the back of the run which is where the chub were laying up....
-
Had 3 in quick succession - never good sign when you're after something that would have them for hors d'œuvres! 15 trips in Feb - blimey!
-
Great - glad it's just an hiatus not an abandonment! After all it's been gentle prodding from you that's kept my blog going in the past. Have to admit I do feel very lucky having the Kennet (and Lambourn) so close and whilst I've had to forego trips to the Itchen and Frome this winter I've still been able to 'fish locally'!
-
Thanks John - nice to hear from you again - in truth the 3-10 was a total surprise - I had a 2-14 from this bit of canal back in the autumn and was hoping there might be a 'scraper 3' to be found - but nothing this big was on my radar.....
Any plans to restart your blog?
-
I fish a lot heavier float - 5½AA and step up to 8AA on faster rivers such as the Itchen & Frome.....
-
Yes - still active - took back some water that NAA gave up last year,,, http://rtaa.btck.co.uk/RTAAVenues
-
No - afraid not - this is a small syndicate that took me 10 years to get in!!! The River Lambourn stretches in my blog are free - and that's about it - all the other local ones (apart from this) are Newbury, Thatcham or Reeds waters.....
-
Trotting - as always!
-
Hiya! That's a splendid run of fish - pity about the biggie - just have to catch it in the next couple of months when she's at her heaviest! I didn't venture down to the main river on my last trip - expect the weirpool was a pity pacey!
Probably bump into you on LS sometime.
-
Umm - bit to cold and bright for the canal methinks. Not too chilly for wading (in fact it's never too chilly for wading, oft times in the winter the water is warmer than the air temperature!)

Maybe not!
From the Angling Trust:Good morning everyoneThe Government have now formally responded to the representations made by the Angling Trust. We have promoted the huge benefits of fishing on individual health and wellbeing and have been able to present a case to which the Government have listened. On this basis I am pleased to announce that fishing will be permitted during the third national lockdown. The Head of Sports Participation at DCMS confirmed the following;“fishing is allowed as exercise so long as participants adhere to the rules on staying local, gathering limits, social distancing and limiting the time spent outdoors”This has also been confirmed by DEFRA;“Cabinet Office have now officially confirmed that angling / fishing (incl. sea fishing off private boats, water sports) can be considered exercise and are hence permitted.”We have worked extremely hard to reach this position and we as anglers have a duty to abide by the strict conditions under which fishing is once again permitted. With infection rates and death tolls rising we must stick to the Government’s rules and ensure that angling remains part of the solution and does not cause problems. Please bear in mind these key points which will be reflected in the new Angling Trust guidelines which we will publish shortly:- This is a strictly limited resumption of LOCAL fishing and very different to how we have been allowed to operate since May- We are in a National Lockdown and this must be respected. The law requires a ‘reasonable excuse’ to leave your home or penalties will apply.- The government has recognised that fishing can be seen as exercise, which is expressly permitted under the lockdown rules, although outdoor recreation is not.- Organised sporting gatherings are prohibited so no match fishing.- The exercise is limited to once a day so no overnight fishing whatsoever.- To remain within the law you should follow the government’s guidance, and only fish locally within the district where you live. If you have no local fishing available then you will have to take your daily exercise in other ways.We are once again able to enjoy the sport we love at a time when many others can not and we must ensure that every angler adheres to the rules.I would ask all anglers who are not members to join the Angling Trust and give us your support. We have worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome and that is only possible thanks to the support of our new and existing members. I would ask all anglers who value their ability to go fishing to make the same commitment as your fellow anglers have and join the Angling Trust. We are stronger together!Membership - Angling Trust https://anglingtrust.net/membership/Stay safe and very best fishesJamie CookCEO – Angling Trust -
Umm - wonder if this will turn out to be my last trip of the season - not a very auspicious ending if it is!!!

Merry Christmas to you to - Martin. Glad you warmed to trotting with a pin - I guess you've realised its pretty much ALL I do in the winter - and a great way to keep mobile and stay warm too. I did consider the Kennet yesterday but thought a half inch of rain and a sudden drop in temps would be too sub-optimal. The Lambourn is always my default in such circumstances - grayling always obliging no matter what the mercury reads! And well done on the canal - I keep hearing of decent perch coming from that stretch - but I failed to find any worth the scales on 2 or 3 exploratory trips I made last winter - looks like there's a lot for them to eat at least!
And there'll be no vol-au-vents in the bait fridge - that would be a step too far for Mrs P - it gets used as a drinks fridge - no food as such!
-
No - just that tree - think it was probably the people who's garden it was - as all the cut logs were on their lawn. Upstream is still a jungle - in fact worse if anything!
-
I have a Youngs Purist - but found it a little on the heavy side - especially if I'm on the bank all day - used to suffer with 'tennis aka trotting ' elbow when I used it for long periods!

Having not bought a major item of tackle in ages (my Harrisons' are now 20 years old) I'm not best placed to advise on tackle choices. I know of a few anglers who have the Drennan Acolyte float rod and like them a lot (and a lot lighter than a Harrison) but I also know of a couple of friends who have had Acolytes break on them! Also I'm not that au fait with the budget end of the centre pin market! The reel I showed you is a Speedia (Wide Drum) a very functional reel, quite light and an excellent free spinning movement. Made around 50-60 years ago I believe. It does all my heavy lifting these days - might not have the charm or the classical elegance of an aerial type reel (of which I have many!) but it's a reliable work horse. IIRC Paul paid around £65 for it a decade or so ago. They still regularly appear on ebay - alas prices are around double this - which pushes it close to the second hand aerial market! Why not ask a question or two on the main forum here - and see what others suggest as regards both items?

Was convinced it was a 3lber as I landed it in the gloom. A long fish - which lacked a bit of depth - but well pleased. 4pm is usually dinner bell time for perch in December - I've lost count of the number of times a potential blank has been saved in the last few minutes of winter daylight and, like yesterday, often with a biggie!
-
I feel slightly embarrassed! Was convinced you'd get something from P42 - only reason I stopped fishing there is I reasoned on there not being any biggies in the swim. Keep at it - I've been fishing Speen since I joined NAA in 1982 - so have built up quite a bit of 'water knowledge' over the decades! If it makes you feel any better I just checked by diaries for my first ever visit - 24/7/82 - I fished all day (12 hours from 0500 - 1700) for a solitary gudgeon and 2 trout parr!
C.
ps - my float rod is 15'.
I even wrote a review of them a while back....

Pretty much the same - though I'll often/usually start by having 10-20 mins loose feeding (still little and often) and NOT casting - very often results in a chub first chuck! Will also rest favourite chub hotspots - and often do the same when I return (loose feed without casting).
