  10. Yeah,thats what i would say after i just had a 90!!
  11. I agree,a carp is "just a fish" and i never said they were intelligent,They have to mouth things to see what they are, after all, they dont have hands! And isnt that the point of this discussion, creating something different/out of the ordinary,to get those fish down on the deck, and sampling the hookbaits? After all,we are just trying to trick them. I fail to see how dyes are different from flavour bases, agreed the chemicles are different, but they are still non naturally occuring chemicals in the fishes world. Add to that, most commercially available baits will have a coulouring in them, even if its just brown! I remember well the dye used to make bronze maggots, crisodine as i remember? Was carcinogenic to humans though, not fish oh,and the winter secret is very flouro, and unless the recipe has changed, its got no seed in it! Tight ones,Jay
  12. Lawks! Fantastic fish, which by rights should have died when it had a nylon rope bound around its belly, and the skin actually grew over the rope! Amazing creature!
  13. "he feels (and I agree) that the reason they work is that they are so different/in your face that they tempt/shock carp into a "curiosity" pick up." I totaly agree, and for a long while i also thought it was the fact the flouros where so blatant, the carp had to investigate, but surely now,so many years down the road from the fluoro boom,we are still nabbing them on the same tactics, surely the "shock" factor should be lost by now? We all know fish "learn" by association,do they still work, not because of the colour, but because,99.9 percent of the time we use them with a more efficiant rig? (popups v bottom baits,IMHO popup rigs get in the carps mouth less often than bottom baits, but are better at pricking/hooking/making chances) "Its just that I dont think it would give you any advantage and in many cases actually put fish off.You certainly wouldnt get the reaction that they were designed to promote". Single flouros got the results, why couldnt a bed of them? As you said earlier, flouros where designed to shock/tempt a nibble,i still fail to see why a bright bed couldnt acheive the same thing? Granted i think its possible it could blow quickly, but you could have a lot of action before it does! "I would personally not be in favour of feeding lots of (unnecessary) artificial chemicals to the carp I'm fishing for." If you use "flavours" in your baits, you already are! I am reliably informed the colour used in winter secret comes from the sweet industry, and is totaly inert Tight ones,Jay
  14. Why not Rob? Whats to say that fluro pink isnt the way to go,as we all know single brightly coloured baits have scored well for several years now, whats to say a big bed of brightly coloured sweeties is going to be less effective than a bed of dull baits? Big beds of sweetcorn has been highly effective for years, nice and bright! I would guess our lovely old carp have been banked for more times on "safe and natural looking bland colour"baits, than big beds of bright ones! Got to be worth a try! That said,i roll me own and they are dull and bland coloured
  15. Solars' winter secret,i believe its just called secret now Good Gear Regards Jay
  16. 30 years ago i was 7 and had just started fishing the wensum for anything that swims and failing to catch just about all of them.Oddly i had this mad urge to fish at such a young age even though none of my family ever fished,i have no idea where i got the urge to angle from. On another odd note,i fished heather lakes in brittany about 3 years ago as i remember, and gareth who started this post came and filmed us for the angling lines dvd, small internet innit!
  17. Get out there, you wont catch them at home Admittedly being a little chilly it does make the sport a little slower, but the fish will be mooching about, and if they are on the move they are catchable I think this time of year, even though the temps are down a bit,the amount of daylight hours is the trigger to get the fish on the move, granted water temps will influence how hard they feed, but there is always a chance of a nibble! Good luck
  18. You can get seam tapes from camping shops, but its not that great I found the best way is clear mastic, squirt some in a small container, and from the inside using a 1/4" brush just paint the seams, lasts for years
  19. Well done on the fish! It has scales, its a mirror, thems the rules
  20. Oil thickens when its cold, winterised oils are less likely to thicken,i dont know of any pellets that contain winterised oils. Most cold water pellets have very little oil, less fishmeals but higher levels of wheatgerm, which is easier to digest in colder conditions Also carp are not great at utalising the extra lipids when the water is a bit "chilly"
  21. Dont be scared to give them plenty to eat, early april i normally use a kilo of bait on each rod to start with, adding more if i see any activity or get a nibble. Also as the water temps will still be quite low,its not a bad idea to stay away from anything too oily until later in the month
  22. Over £18 million (at the 2006 bid price) will be spent on building the 2012 Olympic shooting sports venue at Woolwich Barracks and then after the Olympics it will be pulled down again. This is not only a total waste of money and an immoral use of resources but more importantly it does not leave any lasting legacy for shooting sports in this country. Every year the Great Britain shooting teams bring home medals from competing in ISSF and FITASC disciplines world wide. Surely it deserves a lasting legacy? (Just found out,at current 2008 prices,it will also cost a further 4 million to knock it all down again!) Its our money they are wasting, please sign the petition http://petitions.pm.gov.uk...ting/
  23. Let me know if you decide to split mate,i am local to you,do you have a complete list of everything?
  24. hi mate, try pegasus models in norwich, they do a self assembly job for about £199 or assembled for about £300 i believe, they also have a website, just do a google search, hope this helps
  25. jay

    carp

Another trick to try while giving the fish side strain to turn it from the snag is to plunge as much of the tip of your rod in the water as possible, often if you do this in time the fish will kite in a big arc away from the snags
