I'm with bob on this one..Go for a fixed spool set up and enjoy your fishing first then progress to a multi later,rod length is a up to you 13ft gives a slightly larger casting arc and a bit more leverage to fire the lead out.best of luck

red rocket fuel and 2 break blocks in the bearings will tame it down to a more managable reel if you're not used to them..

Somthing has to be done by our wonderfull government before it's to late for the stocks to recover..Should never have let in the french and spanish trawlers...

My elder brother went to the penn trade show and apparently the bearings have been uprated and the breaking has also been improved to give more cast control.Sounds like it's gonna be a good reel looks pretty much the same as the old one just with a few small improvements..From what the rep told my big bro penn have acctualy listend to the feedback from anglers and made changes to suit.Sounds like a little cracker, he's hoping to get the first of them in the shop for around january but nothings definate yet but i know i want one..

Couldn't agree with you more big john...pendulum casting should be banned from match fishing...Some people just don't seem to have any sence of consiquence when it comes to casting and we all need to take care and remember that there are other people on the beach trying to enjoy there fishing and the last thing they want is a lead missile wizzing past there nose...The largest majority of my fish are caught between 30 and 100 yards and not inxs 180.If distance is needed like you said a good otg cast will do the job just as well...tight lines

best bet is to take up tels offer and get some instruction.Casting instructors are worth there wieght in gold...

Anybody who pendulum casts on a crowded beach needs to be repremanded...A crack of from a pendulum cast could go litteraly anywhere but more times than not the lead goes head high down the beach and the consequences don't bear thinking of...I myself pendulum cast to a good standard but wouldn't dream of doing it anywhere but on a deserted beach or when all fellow anglers where on my safe side so any cock ups fall safely away from them..In most situations my cast is just an arealized ground cast which gets to the fish just fine on almost all the venues i fish...Just last night i was fishing low water of of mineheads gas works beach and was catching whiteing of good size and numbers all at around 70 to 100 yards...I put a few out to the horizon and didn't get a touch so just goes to show that range isn't the be all and end all of beach fishing......

Makes no difference at all in a fishing situation.On the tournament field the resulsts speek for themselves and the mag reels do have the edge.As long as it gets the bait out to where the fish are it's up to the indevidual what sort of breaking system they use.Personaly i prefer the mag reels but thats just me....

A friend of mine has a daiwa shv and it's a superb fishing reel to use very smooth casting and user friendly..

Problem with the 535 mag is it has a conventional spool set up as apposed to the 525mag which has the ultra cast design with on onoard bearings and one at each end of the spindle making it allot more free running and with the lighter spool makes it superb casting reel.I have the same problem with my old 525 gs converted it to magnets and it's garbage compared to my other reel...

The 7ht just isn't strong enough to deal with the rough ground and is only realy a clean to mixed ground reel,superb to cast with and requires very little in the way of tuning. For the rougher stuff my first choice will allways be the penn 525 and 535,bullet proof gearing and 6:1 retrieve is just the ticket on the rocks and reefs of the bristol channel...But don't discount the daiwa sl20 and sl30shv brilliant reel just a bit bulky for my taste..

I can understand where you're coming from on this one but is match angling not a sport as it is undergone either in a team or as an individual event with a very competitive nature to it and so can class match fishing as a sport...Then you have recreational fishing which as you say is undertaken by most of us and quite rightly can be classed as a hobby or past time.I think as a whole the majority of fishermen and women only ever take from the sea what they intend to eat and return all other undersized and unwanted fish to fight another day. I find it hard to see how fresh water fishing could come to an end as it brings quite a substantial revenue to the government's greedy coffers from license fees and day ticket fees etc etc but yes it would be a very sad day for all of us who enjoy all aspects of our hobby if god forbid it ever comes to pass...

The 525 mag simply dosent need cent brakes because it simply dosen't need them so can't possibly be called crap especially by people who havent used them.The cage is stronger and dosen't suffer from the abu problem of twisting and in some cases the reel foot breaking.The abu is a very good reel but not as robust or as well built as the penn...Don't knock it unless you've tried it....

I just wonder how many members of the ALF are vegetarians and don't ever go tho the shop and buy one of those mythical fish in a box that of coarse didn't suffer at all on the deck of a trawler before it went to mr birdseye...or maybe just brainless thugs jumping on this f@*^ed up rollercoaster they call justice.

Nothing i can add that hasn't been said allready on here.It's just a shame that we have a majority of doughnuts that think oh it's only a few small fish for my cat it'll be alright when these are the people who will be the first to moan when we have nothing left to fish for.I just hope that if a license is brought in then the revenue is put back into fishing and all our fish stocks are preserved for generations to come and not just the bass.If the big picture isn't addressed soon and something done then sea fishing will become a thing of the past.When was the last time anyone went to a famous cod venue and landed a 8lb plus fish which was pretty much the norm in years past and it seems to be getting harder and harder as the years go on and nothing gets done.... :mad: :mad: :mad:

Iuse the penn 525 mag after years of using an abu 6500 and find the penn is a much more robust reel for every occasion it's got the guts and the gearing to use over rough ground and cast's like a dream wheras the abu is more of a clean ground reel and has a slower retrieve.If you want a near bullet proof reel go for the penn you will not be dissapointed.....

Hi toerag I have owned a penn 525 mag for the past 2 years and as a general all round fishing real i quite simply can't fault it,the reel is simply perfect for light boat work and off the shore the casting performance is superb straight from the box,all i had to do with mine was wash it after each use and changed the oil in the bearings about 3 times in the first year.A friend of mine has a daiwa sl20sh which i found a bit bulky and uncomfortable to use,the spool is deeper than the penn and narrower which meens in a casting situation you have to strech your thumb a little bit farther than on the penn and the breaking system can cause a few nasty birdsnests if it isn't serviced regularly...Yuo might want to consider the penn 535 mag which gives you the same cast control and performance as the 525 but in a bigger reel especially if you plan on using it for congering and maybe likewise the daiwa sl30sh or shv for the same reason...Call me bias but if it was me i would go for the penn every time mainly for it's pure ease to use..Hope this helps..Tight lines

:mad: otg casting and pendulum casting can be an absulute pig to master but the rewards are worth all the frustration.My advice would be to do what i did,get your technique right and remember to relax and just concentrate on stance and body position the rest will come in time as you get more comfortable with your style.If your hitting 140yrds you must be doing something right just stick at it and don't try to hit the cast to hard the power will grow with your casting style and confidence but well done so far keep at it...The problem your having with cliped down rigs,have you tried gemini srt springs in your rigs to apply tension on your hook snoods and keep the whole thing tightly clipped untill it hits the water best of luck

Sorry but i have to disagree with kentangler. I use a 13ft abu suveran xp and am only 5ft10 with average build.I use a penn 525tournimag mounted down buttloaded with 15lb red ice and a 70lb leader with a 5oz lead on the end of a clip down pennel rig and with a casting style that i have worked hard to perfect can comfortably hit distances inxs of 120yrds...I do pendulum cast but ONLY when circumstances allow,most of the time it's a tucked off ground style which i find works very well with suprisingly little effort.Work hard on technique and the rod will provide the power without having to put all your effort into the cast.
