  1. Where abouts is this chap Elton? It sounds like the split may be along the grain of the cane, I can't see how it would have split in the other direction. Perhaps the adhesive holding the cane section has got damp into it and swelled. It's hard to tell without the details or picture. If it were mine I would try the repair myself. I would either try and clear the join of whatever is in the way and re-glue that part with some Cascamite liquid glue, this is probably what would have been used in it's original manufacture, it's liquid enough to work it's way down into the crack and reseal the section but would need the old glue removed as best as possible. Either that or consider simply whipping over the damaged area as it would add extra strength. One thing is for sure I dont think anyone would consider much more as it would be a massive job to remove the cork handle rod rings and ferrules etc. Even then I dont know how they would split the already glued sections of cane. Hard to tell without seeing any pictures.
  2. Good old Ray, one of the most underestimated anglers of his time in this country. I'm not sure where I posted this pic before of him, I know it was here somewhere on anglersnet but can't remember where. I just saw this post about him and thought perhaps I should post him again. I took this snap while I was at the world champs way back in the 1980's. I think it was on the Rhine in Alsace. He used to get on very well with our French angling brothers but never seemed to be wanted by us. Pardon moi if you have already seen this pic!
  3. Brilliant, thanks mate thats been driving me bonkers for ages. cheers
  4. Hi I tried sending you a PM message but looks like you may have the function disabled so I'll ask here. Hi, I was wondering if the rods you were advertising were still for sale? If so do you have any pics of them and how much are you asking for them? Thanks Paul
  5. Can I change the forum view back to normal without the unreadable replies like this? I liked it the way it was so you could read all the replies in one thread without having to open each one up. Im sure you know what I mean Newt ! Thanks
  6. haha I'm not the only one who think this way then eh mates
  7. Budgie, since Newt has left this thread open I am off again. Budgie, so what if I am the only one that has this opinion, I do not care and will not change. Does that mean I am not allowed to speak my mind because I do not agree with the masses? Budgie, I never said it was ok to kill sea fish. I will not kill any fish for Pike fishing. Budgie, you had better get your facts right before telling me not to reply in posts mate. I am the one who has been trying to help this guy fishing in Northolt. Have you? Where has your assistance been untill now, you have not participated in this thread at all untill now so don't tell me I shouldn't please Budgie, who mentioned game fish eh, no I would not kill them either. On the Lea we are lucky enough to have a few wild Brown Trout. It's a privilege to catch one and release it. Since we are way off track lets get back to the real topic, what do you know about fishing in Northolt Budgie ?! Newt, come on close this thread please, this is all way off topic now isn't it. None of this has anything to do with fishing in Northolt does it? And the original poster is nowhere to be seen after causing such a hoo ha
  8. Guys, I havent even looked at this thread since I replied a couple of days ago. I have no idea whats been said and I dare not look. What was a simple question about what the fishing is like in Northolt has got totally out of control as far as I am concerned. My last comment is this. I know a guy who caught a Chub of a lifetime on the river Lea. It was 8lb 3oz, a very near British record and if caught any later in the year would have smashed it. I have never caught a Chub that size and guess I never will. What would your reactions be if that same guy had decided to take it home for the pot, then perhaps decided to have it stuffed eh? What a total waste of a beautiful fish it would have been. This is true chaps, I just wonder how you would think if that fish had been slaughtered. I feel the same way about any fish, whatever size and however common. Newt!!! Hey mate, close this thread please before it ends in tears!! cheers Paul
  9. Yes I will speak for myself and if I am alone in my comments I still won't change my mind. I don't do predator fishing but thought some of the most popular dead baits were the oily sea ones like Mackerel, Smelt etc.. if live fish are used for Piking then I think that sucks! Like you after 30 years fishing we have formulated our own opinions. I have made my mind up not to kill any fish that I catch, I far prefer to admire their beauty and let them swim off unharmed. I'm not talking about the impact on the stock of any fishery but a deeper appreciation of wildlife. This guy has asked for some info on an area that I know quite well and as long as I have given him some info I think I am entitled to share my opinion regarding taking fish. I have never said it is illegal, I just think it's sportingly unethical. I wonder how many members here take fish, I for one wouldnt dream of it.
  10. I can't understand why anyone would want to fish and kill what they catch. It has never and will never enter my mind. I thought the guy was first and formost asking wht the fishing at Northolt was like, I didn't really think he was going to enter into a deep meaningful conversation about killing fish and if I had know that I would never have replied. Why can't new anglers to the sport be happy to catch fish and return them in one piece without asking about killing them. Seems to me that us chaps that have been fishing all our lives find it very sporting to catch and release our beautiful fish without question. rant over.... well almost
  11. Hi Bromley, yes it's possible to repair the ferrule yourself. I have done repairs on my cane rods like that and it's easy. First thing I would do is mark on the rod where the ferrule is, in other words how far down it sits on the cane and which way up it is, I would make a mark on the male and female ferrules where they meet. Unwhip the ferrule of any whipping and if so just pull it off, thats if the glue has dried out that much. If not then very very carefully warm it with something like a lighter to soften any remaining glue that may be holding it on. When it's off, just sand down the inside as best you can without touching the smooth surface where the male one goes in, just the area where it meet the cane, and sand the cane down a little as well. The glue used for holding ferrules on traditionally is something called Cascamite, you can get it from most hardware shops etc. Anway, whatever you use just marry up the areas you marked to make sure everything is back in the same position or you may find the section will sag etc. Glue it and whip it down and varnish and that should be fine mate. Personally I dont think there is any need to get the rod repaired or ferrule replaced unless there is too much play or the ferrules get stuck. Or Araldite
  12. Ah don't worry Dan, I am just telling you how it used to be years ago. I guess it's it's been cleaned up round there now mate so you have nothing to worry about. Give it a go and let us know how you get on mate
  13. I mean the closest canal to you is at Northolt golf range, on the left hand side of the A40 as you drive towards Greenford roundabout. Talking of Greenford roundabout you could always turn left there and drive up about half a mile and fish the same canal but further round. There's canal everywhere in that area, Perivale, Hanger Lane, Greenford, Uxbridge, Harefield, Rickmansworth, Watford - the list could go on forever..... but I don't know the Marina in Yeading It's worth going into a local tackle shop, I think Judds are still in South Ruislip, very near the station, they could help you a little.
  14. Hi mate, I used to live down the road in Ruislip. There are loads of places to go round where you are. I would start at the Grand Union canal in Northolt! Good fishing there, there is loads canal round you. Try the canal that runs under the A40 as you head towards London on the left hand side, I think there used to be a golf range there and the high nets used to back onto the canal. Loads of Roach and the usual canal fish are there. If you head towards Uxbridge you come across the canal again and can fish either side of the A40 as well. Also Harefield is well worth fishing again thats on the canal. There are loads of lakes in the Colne valley, nearly all private but I think you can fish the Rickmansworth Aquadrome on a day ticket. Nearer home you have the Ruislip Lido, I used to fish there thirty odd years ago, I think thats day ticket too. I would aim for the canal in your area mate, it's all over the place, around Northolt, Greenford, Southall, Harefield, Uxbridge, Watford etc etc! You say you have fished in Epping?, I live there and there are loads of ponds stuffed with fish and are free to fish. Just don't even think about taking fish home with you whatever the size mate, thats not what fishing is about is it. If you need to take fish home then make sure it's from a Trout fishery that allows that to happen, make sure you don't take them from anywhere else please. Go fishing, have fun, catch some fish and treat them with respect and return them back where they came from and I will answer any fishing questions you have about your area....
  15. Now thats why I asked if it was worth buying the magazine! I havent bought it for years, I got bored with the hard sell of tackle and the same old fishy faces doing the same thing. As for Chis Yates, he is a living fishing legend and anything he writes must be worth reading. At least with him you know he won't be promoting some dodgy new fishing tackle in any of his articles.
  16. Hi mate, I used to fish it years ago and it was good. I fished the stretch parallel with Harrow Road in what I think is Harlesden but not sure and Paddington basin. The fishing on the canal was very good back then apart from the odd shopping trolley but would guess that it must have been cleaned up since then. I used to fish matches along that area but can't remember exactly where now! I honestly can't remember anyone claiming that they owned it back then but a club that springs to mind is one called Raven, I think they were in that area but more towards Kings Cross. Anyway, just in case here is a name and address even though I can't find a number for him. Raven Angling Club E G Mears 16 Broomshouse Road, Fulham, London SW6 3QX So in a nutshell I would say the fishing round there was good and perhaps better now. I don't know who owns the water if anyone at all. Hope you do fish it mate, just take care round there as it used to be a bit of a dump if you know what I mean but hey lets hope things have been cleaned up.
  17. Jokes aside thanks for the feedback mates
  18. Can someone tell me is the mag worth buying just for the article?
  19. Yes Chris those Tarpon shots are almost too good to be true! My favorite is the B&W shot fish fighting shot in the rain, great pic.
  20. I'm in Loughton near Epping mates. Home of Ugg boots and Juicy tracksuits Thank god for the fantastic forest
  21. 42 views and no replies mates, come on!! Sorry but I live in Essex mate
  22. Ah I see, sorry Keith! I know what you mean now, I guess we have all seen fish chased by Perch haven't we, and also know when perhaps it's not Perch that are after them. Have there been any sighting on your stretch of river Keith? Is it the Lea?
  23. Hi Keith, Sorry if I missed the point in your post regards Otters. Is the venue you fished here the Lea or somewhere else? I would guess that it's common knowledge anyway but I can confirm thats a yes to Otters in the Lea mate. I belong to the Cemex's Fishers Green Lea and there's been a lot of discussion on their forum regarding Otters. Although I haven't seen any yet I have spoken to three guys who have seen them on the river. One of them is a bailiff so I guess he word is somewhat true. He told me he has seen them on the upper part of our river which is below Kings Weir section. Another guy had seen them half way along the river and also there was one spotted in the area of the green bailey bridge last week. I was fishing half way down the river last week when I saw something disturbing the bushes etc on the other bank, I was expecting something like a dog to appear but nothing did. I have a funny feeling it could have been an Otter. If you know the Fishers Green area, there is a lake called 70 Acre where it's known they were introduced some time back but Im not sure when. Funny really, there are public notice boards up around the lake and river telling the public what to look out for but I never actually expected them to appear. I thought it would be something that would become some sort of urban legend but looks like they are being spotted more even in daylight.
  24. Winkle pickers can be used on canals. There something that I would use in a canal match for legering using delicate tackle. They are made for using light gear, very soft and delicate, soft tips to detect the smallest bite using light line and hooklengths. To hold in one hand and almost rest on your lap. Hope that makes sense!
  25. Hi James, the Kamasan B511 would be fine I guess, you know what it's like, hooks are a very personal choice aren't they! Hemp's easy to use on the hook, just squeeze it from end to end so the hard shell opens up and slide the hook in but don't hook the seed itself, it's not the correct way to use it. You just can't tell whats going to happen with hemp, sometimes it doesn't work but then sometimes its spot on. This is the perfect time of year to try an hemp style attack in a match mate.
