  1. Decided that after a poor summer with the guiding and not many decent fish caught, would go alone and check that I hadn't lost the ability to catch fish... I haven't, sorry to my customers who read this, but you must all be bad luck Lots of bites and three bream. none of them hunt qualifiers but nice fish, the bigguns are waiting for me next week for round 2 of the comp. Biggest fish was about 1.5lb. Before anyone asks, yes I kept them for the pot (the missus favorite) and these are the only 3 bream I have taken this year from who knows how many sessions...
  2. Good work with the shop Mark. Am definitely wanting to be there rather than in the office but when I mention it to the missus I get "and exactly what are Daniel and me supposed to do in Alderney while you are fishing". Well theres the fishing. Or the pub, or the shops, or the fishing, or the cinema, or the pub. Guess I'm gonna have to work on that one!!
  3. Alternatively, do whatever it is that i do when boat "fishing" (or chucking as it's more commonly known) and you will catch loads, doesn't matter what bait it is...
  4. --> QUOTE(Norm B @ Oct 15 2006, 12:31 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well said John, I think you speak for the majority, silent or otherwise. "If you are a true conservationist you wouldn't fish", many people have said to me. My answer, "B****X. Conserving is looking after and farming what you have. Not picking crops is not conserving them, it's wasting them. The fish in the sea are quite capable of being "farmed". Proper fishing practices enable the "crop", to sustain a healthy balance, angling to proper size limits and acceptable bags is farming that crop, to the benefit of that crop. Pair trawling and beam trawling is not farming the crop, it's devastation of the sea bed and a massacre of the crop. Yes there are some "anglers" who kill hundreds of mackerel and leave them to rot but they are not "farmers". But they still kill less fish in a lifetime than trawlers do in a day. This government has said that the "best practices" will be used and the most benefits will be made of the seas produce, or words to that effect. Well, angling is best practice and more businesses benefit from angling than trawling. They can't say that we need trawlers to catch our food as most of the fish we eat is imported. So, at the end of the day, ban commercial fishing and watch RSA take off, employing more people and raising more money than the commercial sector ever did or will. Well said Norm.
  5. Put the reel on a butt section of a rod, feed line from line spool through top ring of buttsection and tie to the reel. Stick a pencil or similar through the spool of line and get someone to hold it (or with practice use your feet), put a bit of tenion on the line with your fingers and reel away... When spooling a multiplier, don't just let the line come off the sides of the spool of line that will make it tangle, you want to to come off the reverse of how it went on for best results. Sometimes helps the reel balance with a non levelwind reel to lump the line at either side before starting to level it out rather than cotton reel style nice and flat all the way. Andy
  6. I would have to agree with most that Abu quality has dropped significantly. I like the lighter abu 6500 to the enn 525 Mag which I also use as they feel better on my bass rods but what can i replace them with that isn't as heavy? The Penn 525 mag wins for casting and how much smoother it is. I have never serviced it n 6 years other than a drop of oil on the bearings when I change the line and it is still smooth as and no problems. The Abu's (2x 6500 C3CT Mags - the sunset orange ones) are not so smooth and after a few months casting was a bit iffy and the brakes seem to vary from cast to cast, the drag is not as good either but I like the size of them. Any suggestions on an alternative that I can use on the bass rods without being too heavy?
  7. Leave it as it is mate. You have the right to say what you want about the marks you choose to give info about. they are not all a secret at all. I also take the view to list a whole load of marks. I don't think I have given away any secrets, there are marks which I have not listed but mostly as they are dangerous and I wouldn't want some kid going and breaking his neck trying to get there. The few complaints are likely from miserable individuals who think they are at some secret mark when they go fishing?? They probably aren't and it is well known amongst anglers. Same thing over here, all you need to do to find a secret mark is to wonder round the coast with a pair of binoculars when there's a roving competition on.
  8. The fact that they have no control over anglers is what upsets the commercials most and has been said as a major problem to SFC's and IMO is being used as an excuse to mask commercial activities which are highlighted in another thread.
  9. We catch them sometimes on squid baits, normally hooked in the mouth. Guess they get there quicker than the crabs sometimes!! Not sure on the species, the ones we catch we call Spiny Starfish for obvious reasons.
  10. Quite right Puffin. When will the commercials look to their own futures and see they are killing their own income in the future as well as other peoples for a quick buck today.
  11. The report has been shrunk down in size if anyone had trouble downloading it, please try again. Cheers Andy http://www.fishing-guernsey.co.uk/SACN/2005report.pdf
  12. What are they feeding on? What's bringing the Bass in with the mullet? we get bream in Mullet shirvy taking bread (seen then up to 4lb this year like that on a number 8 and bread on 6lb line)
  13. Sorry, getting carried away, there's about 3 threads on Guernsey running at the moment and all are interlinked and related to each other.
  14. If the Uk anglers do not support the anglers in Guernsey over bag limits and it gets through (God forbid), then it opens up everything for shore bag limits, licences etc and the UK SFC's if they see an "expert" saying the measures have "helped" they WILL follow suit as they will be seen to be being helping. Please please pick up a pen and oppose this rubbish. Restrictions on the commercials are the way to go. Look at the figures from the commercial logbooks. http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=67122
  15. Hi Grant, nothing at all in the local press yet, but I intend to change that once I have had a chance to write somehting. Been a bit busy of late... Any help appreciated...!! It's all a bit overwhelming with attacks from all sides on several issues but then that's exactly what the commercials want isn't it!! Confusion to scupper the disorganised and the commercials, I have to hand it to them, are very well organised and work as a team with this sort of thing.
  16. I should add that you should remember that the breeding bass caught down here are not only from Guernsey but as the tags have proved, they are YOUR fish being slaughtered, so if you notice a decline in numbers, it could be something to do with the commercials down here. Vote to support RSA and write to the SFC regarding their consultation (see posts here: http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=66501 and here: http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=67122 for further info)
  17. All Uk anglers just remember that if a bag limit system (for example) got through in Guernsey, it would be much easier for the Uk SFC's to follow (after all they do all talk to each other, including Guernsey). This poll is part of a much bigger picture and a massive attack on the SFC and it's pandering to commercials.
  18. Will try and send a PM later Grant. This question is on 45 only. It's part of a bigger picture as it were. So 45cm in Bailiwick Waters, yes or no. Consider that the two bass clubs here have size limits of 50cm to V of tail and 4lb respectively. Cheers Andy
  19. This is being asked following Guernsey's consultation on bag limits and the release of the 2005 commercial statistics. We want to make some informed responses and would appreciate the input. Andy
  20. I have to say Steve that I have put a fair bit of effort in this year as several people have come over for he fishing wanting to catch bass with me and the results have been poor to say the least. Also of note are the figures on bream... SFC have a lot to answer for. Bloody politicians really don't have a clue, the commercials need bag limits on charter boats so they have more turbot/brill to catch as they are running out of bass...
  21. Just notcied as well, reading the rest of the reprt that pair trawing effort increased in the winter months Jan feb march frm 14 days to 37 days. Now what could they be fishing for in those months in the middle of winter???
  22. Boy are these stats showing a big problem with the bass... Statistic report has just appeared on their website. It's a bit large at over 5MB but I don't have the software to shrink it a bit. have copied it to be hosted by me. Link below. You will need broadband. Of interest is the fact that bass landings increased from 127tonnes to 173 tonnes. I make that a 36% increase. no wonder they want bag limits to try and save some of the fish. problem is that these figures are 100% commercials from logbooks. Note also the Boue Blondel langings have increased from 55 to 85 tonnes. Not a small increase!!!!! All fish from this mark are breeders. This as gone way to far but they say it is sustainable as the tagged fish have not been caught and catches continue to increase... http://www.fishing-guernsey.co.uk/SACN/2005report.pdf Comments?? Andy
