The point I am trying to make lads is that these warning are beeen given out willynilly on an almost daily basis there was anotrher one on news 24 this morning-windy there has been the -1 warning. Thursdays warning was the only one I feel was warrented in months .If I was a Scot and I cacelled a haggis party cause of a -1 SEVERE WEATHER WARNING im going to look a right plonker.

Hiya Challenge, Yes it has been a breeze of wind and judging by the chaos and tragedy it has caused I rest my case.

The weather warnings I have spoke about have been for the north of England of which I am part. Yes it has been a tad breezy and next doors wheely-bin blew over once but what I am saying is these warnings are been handed out too liberally the BBC today are even reporting that a car had to swerve to avoid a branch on the road -so what? Ive been stuck in snow drifts on the wolds a few times travelling to work and it never even made the local papers. So is it safe to go fishing or should I heed the warnings and stay indoors. Believe me when some REALLY bad stuff comes will people take notice?

Another year , another week , another day and yet another "severe weather warning". Am I alone in thinking that the BBC are been far to ready to hand out these warnings there nearly every day. Dont know what its been like darn south but weve had no SEVERE WEATHER up here in fact its been lovely our hanging baskets still in bloom and the rhubards coming on a treat. Serious though the more these warnings are handed out then the less notice we will take of them and in sports like ours this could be a dangerous thing.
  5. I recall there been a lot of effort to catch burbot in the seventies driven by Angling times, trying to see if they were indeed extinct. One or two may have even been caught I remember going to fish for them with the promise of a large cash reward for catching one . I think it was the Great Ouse relief channel and the river Hull (im from Yorkshire) we tried. The whole exercise went on for some months Cannot remember if one was caught though. If old copies of Angling Times are available then I am sure the story could be brought back to life. Good Luck
  6. Glad this subject has been raised as I have fished Nerja from the shore for a few years now in july/aug unaware a license was needed .Looks like Ive had a lucky escape. I know the local cops are very unrelenting especially to"English Pigs" as I and about 10 other cars got done driving down a oneway dirt track in the middle of nowhere once , they were waiting at the end E100 each.
  7. Was Antony Worrel-Thompson cooking-up the cod or the pipefish?
  8. Challenge, I like my fish skin-on and so do a lot of other people will this be an option? With no more fish to fillet Challenge what are you going to do when out at sea?
  9. Maybe a dozen or so landed at Whitby this year that I know biggest about 20lb but the Whitby lads will have a better idea. There were twice that number on the market one morning from one shot, trawler working locally in fact there was more halibut than cod! this was in june. Lovely fish for eating.
  10. CHEERS CJS2 Ive just got up J E Ashford still a bit sleepy but good to see you are still alive and not been kidnapped by the sons of neptune. Prahaps they thought the better of it cause I dont think you would fetch much anyway John. So you not fishing today giving them bass chance to re-group.
  11. John has gone a bit quiet on us since Ken I hope very much he has not been put off by the extremist element on theis forum. Come back John! Maybe he is out there blanking.
  12. I expect this subject has been discussed before on this site but I do not remember in my time on the forum. For years and years and years and years before that an easterly wind has been like a curse on the fishing- up here in the northeast anyway weather it be bait , lure or even netting. Even the professional jigging boats used to turn for home on an east wind for fear of wasting fuel on a poor trip. In these times of scarce or expensive bait and high fuel costs not to mention the traffic would it be wise to stay at home? Or is the whole thing a myth , does anyone recall "red letter days" on an easertly?
  13. A Very sober and well thought out response to a prickly subject I thought Chub.
  14. John is just an angler, fisherman, hunter just like 99% of us Steve. He is (rightly so ) proud to show off his catch no more bass shopping down the supermarket for John for a while and no discard or sea-bed damage -everyones a winner. If it upsets you so much Steve why not join the sons of neptune or take up birdwatching Bill Oddies quite good they say.
  15. You are right Glenn I thought It was being officially brought up with MPs or something ;any way this has come up again and its small news to the powers so at least these dittos will be here for ever and we will be vindicated (or not).
  16. Hello Challenge, I am sure the possible closure of any fishery will only follow extensive research on discard rates wich will prove or disprove the reports. I have to say I have been told they are "very, very high" by someone who has worked the last 2 seasons on it. Maybe it was diffrent when you worked it Challenge what with faster towing speeds and more small fish I dont know. The thing is though if there is a chance that the survival of millions of fry at hardly any cost and cause so few fishermen depend on these few weeks anymore then its is at least worth exploring. If reasearch is done and a closure put in place even as a trial then everyone including your and J+Ms business may benifit. As you say if a problem is indeed there. I have just read fishing news and they are giving the impression the north sea is knee deep in fish and the esturies full of small bass I fear we may be heading for a big shock if complacency sets in.

    Kent congers

Think it was big-cod who told me they used to be on the wrecks in Yorkshire and also read of divers coming across them this far north while salvaging scrap post war then the afore mentioned big freeze came and they disappeared. Never heard of any been caught up here -ever. In these times of warming sea levels I wonder if they will return to the northern North Sea?
  18. The trouble is if you do have a good catch , put a report up and dont return the fish dead or alive you get so much abuse you might as well admit to missing Mrs Thatcher.
  19. What more can I say John but brill report who needs angling mags when we have got you writing for us ?When you finally have a red letter day - which you will John, one day be it from shore or afloat will it be P.C.to report it or not ? or will it all go qiuiet ? Thanks for the story J. Relief from all the heavy stuff on here recently.,
  20. Thats life Snatch its happening all the time in all the seas in all the world.
  21. We have been through that and are coming out the other side minus the wreck-netters and things are looking ok . Fancy a trip north of Watford gap Stavy?
  22. No. Dont know but give me half a million £ and twenty years and Ill research it.
  23. The thing is Stavey this is a sustainable fiishery as said before. It is as eco friendly , environmently pc as it comes mate its not like stcking dynamite, mono nets, dredges, steel beams about. Do you know what damage is caused? But Stavy the most important thing is it provides jobs, enjoyment and an imput into the local economy. What is wrong with that?
  24. Ok then Sharky would it be better for ten of us to go and buy eighty stone from the supermarket over say 1 yr., would that make it ok in your mind? Even if the fish was line caught would it help the cod stock? In case you cannot work it out both options still the same . It is rare to find that sort of fillet on sale that was recently caught(size) so less fish killed and no seabed shagged. Like I said before this type of fishing is and has been sustainable for years. I bet the Dutch jigging boats are watching the situation as well.
  25. Says it all Glenn .This post is a classic "I rest my case" and could be re-used on a number of threads in the coming months I guess.
