    advice req.

thanks to all who replied.the venue is an ancient moat near llanstanfraid in n.wales.from the ordnance map it seems that a sream feeds the moat from the rv.vrnwry.although we could not see it when we got there.anyway i managed two fish around the pound mark on a bloodworm/buzzer plus a small chub,my mate had two similar fish using a black 'beetle' like fly twithed along the bottom.cheers.John.

  5. its a good but can be noisy site.the fishing is for trout in ullswater.ledger with worm or swimfeedered maggott in the evening.the fish should ave.12oz.fly fishing available on the river eamont but its not easy.good luck
  6. i suggest you go to a good tackle shop.too much to answer on here although £200 imo would be well enough,...good luck.

    recipe

caught an 11lb pile from loch lomand yesterday.after i grilled it ,it tasted orrible.anyone know a good way to cook small pike?
  8. a great thread.unfortunately a sign of the times.football with the family? forget it. a meal out for the family!! a days trip with the price of fuel? angling here, tackle, dearist in the world, maggotts trebled in price in no time at all,syndicates...a lot of use they are to a man and child, motorways always still, cormorants, beer at £2 odd apint, house prices, took me 7hrs today to get from loch lomond to wigan....if i were younger i'd be away from this place.

    lures

are they cheaper to buy from the usa,are there any problems?
  10. what a lot of childish bickering.all i know is that the 4 main rivers i fish, the dove, upper trent, severn and the ribble have suffered a serious decline in fishing for 6 -12oz fish (in particular the dove) in the last 2yrs.due the sodding things that it is hardly worthwhile to get the centrepin out these days. i once used to tell people to go to the dove, now i tell them not to bother.i know,i fish the river almost every night!!! the answer, you tell me???
  11. well done.don't worry about the weight or the picture.you know in your own mind what you caught and thats what matters.

    octopus!!

a chap on the river last sunday told me he has been using tinned octopus chunks to good effect, was he winding me up?
  14. martin, try contacting dave lumb at tarlton.www.dlst.co.uk he is well known for his tactics on the rufford canal.i know he uses side planers to good effect as i have seen him with them.
  15. hi martin.what are you after, pike, roach, perch? the loch is apparently full of good perch again.i was passing a couple of weeks ago and saw a couple of locals land two pike whilst i was chatting with them.it seems like there are loads of jacks to be caught.e-mail me if you like and i will tell you a bit more, cheers, john.
  16. hi ,i asked a similar question last week(see thread confused,by john) .the braid recommended to me on the bank for barbel two weeks ago was called snakebite.it comes with a coating over the braid.you can either leave this on in which case the braid is stiff,or you can remove it to make the braid supple.trouble is,like everything else fishing related in this country it is bloody expensive.£!2.50 per.50mtrs.i thinks braid for barbel is becoming more popular so there must be something in it.good luck, john.
  17. Well done, what is the name of the site.

    confused

thanks again for the replies.well i spent 6hrs on the ribble on sat.had one barbel and one half decent eel.sat for a long period with two rods, one with a main line braid and snakebite hooklength set up,one with 6lb maxima straight thro'.got a bite immediately after fitting a fluro.hooklength via a swivel to the maxima.no bites on the braid.however the river seemed 'off' as the other two anglers on the length were struggling as well although i did witness a 7lb 2oz bream for a chap fishing for barbel!!! it seems like some of you were correct in advising me not to use fluro with braid, thanks.

thanks again guys.ajp i think you may have sorted part of the problem out, braid main and fluro.hooklength has been the set up.the weak link on strike then is obviously the fluro.maybe if i want to use braid i should use a braid type hooklength.if i then use use fluro as a hooklength then i should try maxima or similar as the mainline.big test tommorrow then on the ribble, provided i can get bites of course, thanks again.

thanks for the replies.however there seems to be a split decision on this topic at the moment.the line i am using is called Uncle Jacks which got a good report in last months issue of trout fisherman.the knot i use is the one i have been using on mono for 35 yrs.i think it is a blood knot,i know i should know the name but i have been using it for so long now!!(maybe it's a four turn water knot) i like the idea of tying the line with a palomar as this is much more reliable for braid.i must admit that from your replies i am still in a quandary as what to do,give it up or continue to persue.i will be chasing some very big barbel on the Ribble this sat.and may look to an alternative.a guy i was speaking to last week at the ribble was using fireline as the main and something called snakebite!?!? or something sas the hook length. He seemed a very experienced angler and swore by this set up....if i finally solve the problem with fluro.i will let you know.thanks,John.
